Overview

The Ford Escape is a compact sport utility vehicle that was first introduced as a 2001 model. Today, the model is in its second-generation, last redesigned for the 2008 model year. The 2011 Escape is a carryover, with only minor changes to the vehicle's audio system (HD Radio has been added as standard equipment across the board).

The Escape is offered in both standard gasoline and hybrid trim levels, with front- or all-wheel drive. The standard XLS model is fitted with cloth upholstery, manual air conditioning, and 16-inch alloy wheels. The XLT adds more power equipment, while the Limited model features leather upholstery and Ford's SYNC in-car connectivity. The Escape Hybrid is offered in standard trim, with cloth upholstery and a full complement of power equipment, and Limited trim with leather upholstery and a power moonroof.

Under the hood of gasoline-powered models is a 2.5-liter, 4-cylinder engine rated at 171 horsepower. It is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission or an optional 6-speed automatic. Front-wheel drive is standard, with all-wheel drive optional. The Hybrid model features a 2.5-liter, 4-cylinder engine and an electric boost motor combined with a continuously-variable transmission. The EPA rates the 2011 Ford Escape between 21 mpg city and 31 mpg highway, depending on powertrain - front-wheel drive models deliver slightly better fuel economy.

The 2011 Ford Escape XLS starts with a base price of about $21,500 and the lineup tops out with the Escape Hybrid Limited at around $33,000.
