Introduction
The 2014 Ford Edge is a midsize crossover SUV with seating for 5 passengers, offered with front-wheel or all-wheel drive (FWD or AWD), and with 4-cylinder or V-6 power. Its primary competitors include the Hyundai Santa Fe Sport, Kia Sorento, Mitsubishi Outlander, Nissan Murano, and Subaru Outback.

Models and Features
Ford offers the 2014 Edge in SE, SEL, Limited, and Sport trim levels. Upgrading from SE to SEL trim provides Sync connectivity, dual-zone automatic climate control, upgraded interior materials, a 10-way power driver's seat, EasyFold rear seats, auto-dimming rearview mirror, satellite radio, and a cargo management system. Exterior enhancements include automatic headlights, headlight-linked wipers, heated side mirrors, rear park-assist sensors, body-color exterior trim, and 18-inch aluminum wheels. The SEL also has a SecuriCode keyless entry pad on the front door.

Choose the Edge Limited and this SUV includes leather seats, heated front seats, memory for the driver's settings, a 10-way power front passenger's seat, ambient cabin lighting, and a universal garage door opener. The Limited also contains a MyFord Touch touch-screen infotainment system, premium audio system with HD Radio, reversing camera, and a Media Hub with USB ports, an SD card reader, and audio/video input jacks. Extra chrome exterior trim and chrome wheels dress up the Limited's exterior.

Sport trim builds on the Edge SEL, adding a larger and more powerful V-6 engine, paddle shifters, sport suspension, and 22-inch wheels. The Edge Sport also gets unique Charcoal leather seats, 6-way power front passenger's seat that folds flat to expand cargo-carrying capability, black grille, unique headlight and taillight treatments, body-color exterior trim, and oval polished exhaust tips.

Options and Packages
An EcoBoost 4-cylinder engine is optional for the Edge SE, SEL, and Limited, and any Edge equipped with a V-6 engine can be fitted with all-wheel drive.

Additionally, a Convenience package is available for the Edge SE, one that adds several of the SEL's standard features, and this trim level is also offered with a roof rack, all-weather mats, cargo solutions, and a long list of dealer-installed upgrades.

The Edge SEL can be optioned with leather, heated front seats, a fold-flat 6-way power front passenger's seat, and a reversing camera. MyFord Touch is also optional for this trim level, plus a dual-screen rear-seat entertainment system, navigation system, panoramic glass roof, and a power liftgate. The Edge SEL can also be upgraded with a blind-spot information system (BLIS), trailer-towing equipment, cargo solutions, and several wheel designs and sizes. An Appearance package adds a body-color grille, 20-inch wheels with machined surfaces and black-painted pockets, and Charcoal leather seats with Alcantara inserts.

Many of these options are also available for the Edge Limited. Additionally, the Limited can be fitted with HID headlights, rain-sensing wipers, Intelligent Access keyless passive entry with push-button starting, remote engine starting, and a perimeter alarm. The Limited is the only Edge trim level available with adaptive cruise control with Collision Warning and Brake Support technology.

Edge Sport upgrades include Intelligent Access, remote engine starting, a power liftgate, panoramic glass roof, navigation system, and a rear-seat entertainment system. Additionally, the Edge Sport is offered with BLIS, rain-sensing wipers, a perimeter alarm, LED turn signal indicators, and more.

Under the Hood
Choose SE, SEL, or Limited trim and the 2014 Edge is equipped with a 285-horsepower, 3.5-liter V-6 engine that generates 253 lb.-ft. of torque. A more fuel-efficient, 2.0-liter, turbocharged, 4-cylinder EcoBoost engine is optional for these trim levels, making 240 horsepower and 270 lb.-ft. of torque. Both engines are paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission that delivers power to the Edge's front wheels. All-wheel drive is an option only with the V-6.

The Ford Edge Sport has a more powerful 3.7-liter V-6 that makes 305 horsepower and 280 lb.-ft. of torque. In this version, the 6-speed automatic transmission features paddle shifters, and the Edge Sport is offered with FWD or AWD.

Fuel Economy
The most fuel-efficient version of the 2014 Edge has the turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, and is rated to get 21 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway, according to the EPA. The standard 3.5-liter V-6 engine's fuel-economy ratings range from a low of 18 mpg in the city with AWD to a high of 27 mpg on the highway with FWD. The most powerful model, the Edge Sport, is rated to achieve anywhere from 17 mpg in the city with AWD to 26 mpg on the highway with FWD.

Safety Ratings and Technology
In crash tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2014 Edge receives an overall rating of 4 stars (out of 5 stars). However, note that this SUV's frontal-impact rating is 3 stars, as a result of individual 3-star ratings for both the driver and the front-seat passenger. As this model overview is written, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has not rated the 2014 Edge for crash protection.

Every 2014 Edge is equipped with MyKey technology, which allows the crossover SUV's owner to program speed alerts and limits, stereo volume limits, incessant seat belt reminders, and more. Additional safety-related upgrades, depending on the trim level, include rear par-assist sensors, a reversing camera, rain-sensing wipers, blind-spot information system, and adaptive cruise control with Collision Warning and Brake Support.
