Overview
Crossover utility vehicles (CUVs) represent the fastest-growing segment in the U.S. auto market. Sport utility vehicle and minivan buyers are attracted to CUVs because of their fuel efficiency and car-like handling, while traditional car buyers are lured by the CUVs' roomy and versatile interiors and all-wheel-drive capability. Ford got into the game with the Edge for the 2007 model year. The Edge is a 5-passenger CUV that uses the same car-like platform found on the Fusion sedan. The sole powertrain is a 265-hp V-6 engine mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive (2WD) and all-wheel drive (AWD) are offered. With the rear seats folded, the Edge has 69 cubic feet of cargo room.

Model Lineup
The midsize 2008 Ford Edge comes in three trim levels: SE, SEL and Limited, each available with 2WD or AWD. Base SE models come equipped with air conditioning; tilt/telescoping steering wheel; cloth upholstery; driver's seat lumbar adjustment; 60/40 split second-row seat; power windows, locks and mirrors; remote keyless entry; cruise control; 4-speaker AM/FM/CD stereo with auxiliary input jack; rear spoiler; and P235/65R17 tires on alloy wheels. SEL models add fog lamps; 6-way power driver's seat; leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls; keypad entry; 6-disc CD changer; automatic headlights; auto-dimming rearview mirror; and a vehicle information center. The top-line Limited has an Audiophile sound system with 9 speakers; leather upholstery; Ford Sync communications and entertainment system; rear park assist; heated front seats; fold-flat, 6-way power adjustable front passenger seat; memory for the driver's seat and mirror; second-row reclining and power-folding split seats; dual-zone automatic climate control; universal garage door opener; interior air filter; heated mirrors; and P245/60R18 tires on chromed alloy wheels. Options include a towing package, navigation system, Sirius satellite radio, power liftgate, rear DVD entertainment system, and P245/45R20 tires on chromed alloy wheels. Also offered is a Vista Roof, which is a 2-section panoramic glass roof. The portion over the front seats works like a typical sunroof, while a fixed glass panel spans the second row of seats. Power-operated cloth shades can close off both sections.

Powertrain
Ford outfits the 2008 Edge with an aluminum 3.5-liter V-6 engine that delivers 265 hp at 6250 rpm and 250 lb.-ft. of torque at 4500 rpm. The engine meets ultra-low emission vehicle (ULEV) regulations and comes standard with a 6-speed automatic transmission that Ford says delivers 7-percent better fuel economy than a 4-speed automatic transmission. EPA fuel economy ratings are 16 mpg city/24 mpg highway with 2WD or 15 mpg city/22 mpg highway with AWD. The available AWD system is meant for inclement weather and does not include low-range gearing. Properly equipped, the 2008 Ford Edge can tow up to 3500 pounds.

Safety
Standard safety equipment on the 2008 Ford Edge includes front air bags; torso-protecting, seat-mounted front side air bags; head-protecting curtain side air bags with rollover sensors; tire-pressure monitor; ABS; traction control; and electronic stability control (ESC) with Ford's Roll Stability Control which uses the ESC system to prevent a rollover. Rear park assist is standard on the Limited model and optional otherwise.

Technology
Developed with Microsoft, Ford Sync provides a hands-free link to cell phones and MP3 players through a series of voice commands. It recognizes your cell phone's phonebook. It can read incoming text messages through the stereo system and allows occupants to respond with one of 15 predetermined messages. When an MP3 player is plugged in, Sync charges it and has access to the complete playlist. Occupants can tell Sync to play a specific song, artist, or genre of music. Sync will also stream songs wirelessly from a source like a phone/MP3 player enabled with Bluetooth technology.
