Overview
The Sprinter is a full-size commercial van that is built by Mercedes-Benz for Dodge. A similar model, also called Sprinter, is offered by Freightliner. The Dodge Sprinter was introduced for the 2003 model year and was updated for 2007, getting larger in the process. The Sprinter has two front doors, a passenger side sliding door and swing-out rear doors. Power comes from a 3.0-liter V-6 turbo diesel engine or a 3.5-liter V-6 gasoline engine.

Model Lineup
Two wheelbases are offered on the 2008 Dodge Sprinter Wagon: 144.3 inches and 170.3 inches. Two interior roof heights are offered as well: standard (65 inches) and high (76 inches). The Sprinter Wagon has standard seating for 12 with two front bucket seats, 3-passenger second and third rows, and a 4-passenger fourth row. Seven-, 9- and 10-passenger configurations can also be ordered. The Sprinter Wagon is offered as a 2500 model with an 8550-pound Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) rating and it can haul up to 3082 pounds of payload. With the long wheelbase and taller roof, the Sprinter has 187.2 cubic feet of cargo volume. Standard features include cloth upholstery; front air conditioning; AM/FM/CD stereo; rubber floor covering; power front windows and locks; remote keyless entry; tilt- and height-adjustable steering wheel; rear tow hooks; wide-angle exterior mirrors with integral turn signals; and P245/75R16 all-season tires on steel wheels. Options include alloy wheels; upgraded front suspension seats; rear air conditioning and heating; fog lamps; heated front seats; bi-Xenon headlights; roof rails; alarm; 6-disc CD changer; cruise control; sunroof; a wireless cell phone link; three additional axle ratios; auxiliary battery; first aid kit; and a towing package.

Powertrain
The standard engine in the 2008 Dodge Sprinter Wagon is a 3.0-liter, turbocharged diesel engine that produces 154 hp at 3400 rpm and 280 lb.-ft. of torque from 1200 to 2400 rpm. Offered as a credit option is a 3.5-liter V-6 gasoline engine that makes 254 hp at 5900 rpm and 250 lb.-ft. of torque from 2500 to 5000 rpm. Both engines are mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission with Dodge's AutoStick manual shiftgate. Fuel economy estimates are not available because all Sprinters have a GVW of greater than 6000 pounds.

Safety
Standard safety equipment on the 2008 Dodge Sprinter Wagon includes multi-stage front air bags; anti-lock brakes with brake assist (BA) and electronic brake-force distribution (EBD); tire-pressure monitor; traction control; and electronic stability control with Electronic Roll Mitigation and Load Adaptive Control. Optional safety features consist of head-protecting curtain side air bags; torso-protecting front side air bags; ParkSense front and rear park assist; and a rear back-up camera. The Dodge Sprinter has not been crash tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Technology
Electronic Roll Mitigation detects lateral acceleration that might cause a rollover. It intercedes by cutting engine torque and using the anti-lock brake system to apply brake pressure to appropriate wheels to prevent a rollover, Dodge claims. Load Adaptive Control is an adaptive algorithm for the electronic stability control system that calculates vehicle mass and center of gravity to improve braking and cornering issues that might be caused by shifting loads, the automaker explains.
