Overview

What's New for 2014:

  • Revised equipment packages
  • Several new paint colors
  • Enhanced electronic stability control system

Introduction
Considered a Dodge when it exited the market in 2010, the high-performance Viper returned as an SRT-branded model in 2013. Available in coupe form only, the all-new Viper sports a 640-horsepower engine, evolutionary styling, greater refinement, and a host of safety features. Competitors include the Chevrolet Corvette, Audi R8, Jaguar XKR coupe, Porsche 911 Turbo, and the Nissan GT-R.

Models and Features
Car shoppers with a need for speed will find the 2014 Viper available in two trim levels: SRT and GTS. Both variants benefit from engineers' efforts to reduce weight and improve structural rigidity, work that's evidenced by the extensive use of carbon fiber and aluminum. They also share the same high-performance powertrain.

Differences lie in the details. The base SRT Viper offers an equipment list that includes push-button start, premium leather interior accents, 8.4-inch touch-screen infotainment system with Bluetooth connectivity, 7-inch gauge display, 18-inch front and 19-inch rear alloy wheels, power-adjustable foot pedals, auto-dimming rearview mirror, and vinyl upholstery. By contrast, the Viper GTS has leather covering its power seats and much of the interior, and adds other upgrades such as a 12-speaker surround-sound system, navigation system, normal and race suspension settings, and a rearview camera.

Options and Packages
While the 2014 SRT Viper is available with several carbon-fiber parts designed to add to the car's appearance and aerodynamics, the gem among the options is the TA Special Edition package. This is where buyers of the base model can get many of the GTS' 2-mode suspension and upgraded brakes, in addition to orange contrast stitching throughout the interior, Matte Black alloy wheels, and sticky Pirelli P Zero tires.

Reserved exclusively for the Viper GTS is an Anodized Carbon Edition package that consists of Matte Black paint, premium Alcantara interior trim, carbon fiber brake ducts and interior panels, and unique Black Vapor Chrome alloy wheels.

Under the Hood
As befitting a true super car, the 2014 SRT Viper is fitted with an 8.4-liter V-10 engine that produces 640 horsepower and 600 lb.-ft. of torque. That substantial output is handled by a 6-speed manual transmission; an automatic is not offered.

Complementing that stout powertrain is a fully independent aluminum suspension with driver-adjustable Bilstein shocks on GTS models and base variants equipped with the TA Special Edition package.

Fuel Economy
EPA fuel-economy estimates for the 2014 SRT Viper are 12/19/15 mpg (city/highway/combined).

Safety and Ratings
As this overview is written, neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has rated the crashworthiness of the 2014 SRT Viper.

The Viper's engineers and designers have addressed safety by equipping the car with 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with Brembo calipers, bright LED taillights and HID headlights, 2 air bags, rearview camera, and accommodations for 6-point seat belt harnesses. There's also an electronic stability control system with launch control, as well as rain and track (GTS) settings.
