The Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 are very serious work trucks, and they have all-new frames and redesigned bodies for 2006. They also have new interior styling with features such as a full-screen GPS navigation radio and rear-seat DVD entertainment system. Also new for 2006 is the Ram Mega Cab, with a passenger compartment so large that there's room for reclining rear seats.
Dodge's 2006 heavy-duty pickup trucks feature a new chrome crosshair grille over a massive front bumper, both designed to make a powerful statement. Large and angular headlamp modules use halogen bulbs to provide 22 percent more light and a 40 percent improvement in beam spectrum compared to the previous Ram. Interior refinements include new seating options, a redesigned instrument panel and center console as well as new entertainment features. Leather and wood accents are available to enrich the work truck's interior environment. The Ram 2500 and 3500 ST come with air conditioning, a CD player, four-wheel disc brakes with ABS, and 17-inch wheels. The Ram 2500 and 3500 SLT includes an overhead console, cruise control, power windows/locks, and keyless entry. The Ram 2500 and 3500 Laramie add chrome body molding, dual-zone climate controls, audio controls on the steering wheel, and other features.
Power comes from a variety of engines, including a 325-hp, 5.9L Cummins turbo diesel that pumps out a very considerable 610 lb.-ft. of torque. Also available is a 345-hp, 5.7L Hemi V-8. Six-speed manual and 5- and 4-speed automatics are available, as are two- and four-wheel drive, long- and short-beds and even "dualie" rear axles featuring four rear tires for carrying especially heavy loads. Ram heavy-duty trucks with four-wheel drive have recirculating-ball steering that is particularly effective for getting the big truck around a tight turn or for maneuvering a trailer in close quarters.
Even regular cab versions provide interior flexibility with storage room behind the rear seats. Quad Cab versions have four standard doors, with windows that power all the way down, and a 60/40-split folding rear seat. Front seats are a 40/20/40 design to accommodate three people. The 20 percent center section seat back folds down to provide a storage area for a laptop computer or other gear. The Ram Mega Cab offers 145.2 cubic feet of interior room and rear seats that tilt back from 22 to 37 degrees. The rear seats also offer 44.2 inches of legroom. Other Ram heavy-duty models include the Power Wagon, a special off-road version with electric-locking front and rear differentials, electronically disconnecting sway bar, and a 12,000-pound Warn-brand winch. Also available is a TRX4 off-road package with a limited-slip differential, skid plates, unique shocks, and off-road tires.
