Dodge's 2500 and 3500 heavy-duty Ram pickups see a replacement for the former 5.9-liter high-output diesel engine with a new, more powerful and cleaner-running 6.7-liter Cummins Turbo Diesel High Output engine that delivers 350 hp and 650 lb.-ft. of torque. New options include a 6-speed automatic transmission and remote vehicle start.
The 2007 line of heavy-duty Dodge Ram pickups maintains the rugged big-rig style that first revolutionized Dodge's presence in this segment back in 1994. The brawny look is not just a faade on the three-quarter-ton Ram 2500 and Ram 3500; there is substance to back the "Ram Tough" motto. Compared with the light-duty, half-ton Ram 1500 series, the heavy-duty Ram 2500 and 3500 models offer beefier components and engines for the toughest hauling and towing tasks. Heavy-duty Ram pickups come in Regular Cab, 4-door Quad Cab, and stretched Mega Cab body styles. The Mega Cab, which was introduced in 2006, adds 22 inches of cabin length and features rear seats that can recline up to 37 degrees. Trim levels consist of the basic ST, up-level SLT, luxurious Laramie, and, on 2500 models only, the off-road-ready Power Wagon. Both rear- and 4-wheel-drive configurations are available, and all 3500 models-with the sole exception of the Quad Cab Laramie-come with dual rear wheels. Two cargo-bed lengths-6.3-foot and 8-foot-are available.
Heavy-duty Rams come with a choice of two engines and manual or automatic transmissions. The standard engine is the 5.7-liter HEMI V-8, delivering 345 hp and 375 lb.-ft. of torque. New for 2007 is the clean-burning, 650-hp, Cummins 6.7-liter turbo-diesel engine, which, according to Chrysler, reduces nitrogen oxide emissions by as much as 90 percent. So equipped, Ram becomes the first Chrysler Group BLUETEC vehicle and the first to meet stringent 2010 truck emissions standards in all 50 states. The new Cummins diesel engine features an impressive life-to-major-overhaul interval of 350,000 miles and boasts standard-duty oil-change intervals of 7,500 miles.
The Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 pickups compete in the Large Pickup segment, which consists of seven models. Buyers in this segment look for performance, comfort, and reliability, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2006 Avoider StudySM and the Escaped Shopper Study.SM

The Dodge Ram Pickup's 364,177 sales in 2006 represent a decrease of 9.1 percent compared to the previous year. Other models offered in the Large Pickup segment include the GMC Sierra (including heavy-duty models), Toyota Tundra, Nissan Titan, and Chevrolet Avalanche .
