Overview
Chrysler Corporation (now the Chrysler Group) has had an entry in the crossover class since the 2004 release of the Chrysler Pacifica, but Chrysler's Dodge brand hasn't had a crossover of its own until now. Dodge says the 2009 Journey combines the utility of a minivan with the capabilities and prestige of an SUV. Based on Chrysler's D-segment platform that also hosts the Dodge Avenger, the all-new for 2009 Dodge Journey is offered with FWD or AWD and 4-cylinder or V-6 power.

The standard seating configuration is 5-passenger, with an available third row offering 5+2 seating. The second and third rows offer theater-style seating, meaning the second row is 1.6 inches higher than the first and the third row is another 0.6 inches higher yet to allow rear-seat occupants a better view of the road and passengers in front of them. The second-row seating is split 60/40 and folds flat, while the available third-row seating is a 50/50 split-fold design.

The 2009 Dodge Journey offers several practical storage and seating features. An available Flip 'N Stow front passenger seat folds flat and offers a 10.75 x 8.75-inch bin under the lower cushion that is suitable to store a purse, umbrella or planner. The second-row seats are offered with a one-touch Tip 'N Slide system that slides the seats forward, tilts the lower cushions upward, and leans the upper cushions forward to allow easier access to the third row. Hidden in-floor storage, rear doors that open to 90 degrees, and available integrated child booster seats add to the Journey's versatility.

Model Lineup
The 2009 Dodge Journey is offered in three models: SE, SXT and R/T. The SE comes only with FWD, while the SXT and R/T models are offered with FWD or AWD. The AWD system does not have low-range gearing. It is meant for slippery surfaces, not off-roading, Dodge says.

Standard features on the SE model include cloth upholstery; air conditioning; Chill Zone beverage storage bin; AM/FM 6-disc CD stereo with 6 speakers; power windows; power heated exterior mirrors; manual day/night rearview mirror; tilt/telescoping steering column; driver's seat height adjustment; second-row reclining 60/40 seat; and P225/70R16 all-season tires on steel wheels with wheel covers. The SXT model adds cruise control; remote keyless entry; Sirius satellite radio with one-year subscription; YES Essentials cloth upholstery that Dodge says is stain-, odor- and static-resistant; power 6-way adjustable driver seat; fold-flat front passenger seat with Flip 'N Stow in-seat storage; conversation mirror; portable LED flashlight; 115-volt outlet; cargo net; floor mats; trip computer with temperature and compass display; auto-dimming rearview mirror; automatic headlights; touring suspension; and P225/60R17 all-season touring tires on aluminum wheels. The R/T model comes standard with leather upholstery; heated front seats; dual-zone automatic climate control; remote engine starting; front floor console with premium armrest; universal garage door opener; premium door trim panels; bright instrument panel bezels; leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls; leather-wrapped shift knob; front and rear aimable LED lights; fog lamps; performance steering and suspension; and P225/55R19 tires on aluminum wheels.

The SXT and R/T are available with a Flexible Seating Group that has a 50/50 split-folding/reclining third-row seat; a second-row 60/40 Tilt 'N Slide seat; and 3-zone automatic climate control. Other options include rear DVD entertainment with an 8-inch screen; 6 premium speakers with subwoofer and 368-watt amplifier; Dodge's MyGIG Multimedia Entertainment and Infotainment Systems; Dodge's UConnect hands-free cell phone link; a rearview camera; a Trailer Tow Group; and chrome-clad aluminum wheels.

Powertrain
The standard powertrain in the 2009 Journey SE is Dodge's 2.4-liter 4-cylinder "World Engine" mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission with overdrive. It is rated at 173 hp at 6000 rpm and 166 lb.-ft. of torque at 4000 rpm. The EPA fuel-economy ratings are 19 mpg city/25 mpg highway. SXT and R/T models have Dodge's 3.5-liter single overhead cam V-6 engine. Rated at 235 hp at 6400 rpm and 232 lb.-ft. of torque at 4000 rpm, it is coupeed to a 6-speed automatic transmission with Dodge's Auto Stick manual shiftgate. EPA fuel-economy estimates for FWD Journeys with the V-6 engine are 16 mpg city/23 mpg highway, while AWD models with the V-6 get 15 mpg city/22 mpg highway. Properly equipped, the Journey can tow up to 3500 pounds.

All 2009 Dodge Journeys have independent front and rear suspensions. The front features a MacPherson strut design, while the rear design is multi-link. Gas-charged shocks are standard. Suspension crossmembers, both front and rear, are isolated to the body to reduce ride noise levels, and decrease vibration and harshness. Four-wheel-disc brakes, with anti-lock control (ABS) are standard on all models. The AWD system available on V-6 models works on demand, powering only the front wheels until power is needed at the rear wheels, Dodge says. For enhanced handling during performance driving, the AWD system has been calibrated to work on dry pavement between speeds of 25 and 65 mph, the automaker says, adding that the system is completely automatic.

Safety
The 2009 Dodge Journey's standard passive safety features include multi-stage front air bags designed to match deployment speed to crash severity; seat-mounted front side air bags to protect the torso; head-protecting curtain side air bags that shield outboard passengers in all three seating rows; and a tire-pressure monitor. Active safety features on the 2009 Journey include standard all-speed traction control, brake assist, and an electronic stability program (ESP) with electronic roll mitigation (ERM). ERM is a safety system designed to lower the possibility of a rollover during an accident. In the event the system senses an impending rollover, Rollover Sensing will deploy seat and side curtain air bags and will activate the vehicle's seat belt pre-tensioners to protect passengers. For additional safety while towing in adverse conditions such as crosswinds, standard Trailer Sway Control helps to reduce trailer sway and improve vehicle control, Dodge says. The only optional safety feature is Dodge's ParkView rear backup camera.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2009 Dodge Journey receives 5 stars (the agency's highest rating) in frontal crash testing for both driver and front passenger, as well as 5-star side-impact scores for both front- and rear-seat occupants. The Journey receives 4 stars for rollover resistance. As of this writing, the Journey has not yet been crash tested by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Technology
Dodge's MyGIG system is offered in two versions. The MyGIG Multimedia Entertainment system has a 20-gigabyte hard drive that can hold song and picture files. The MyGIG Infotainment system adds a navigation system and the hard drive holds the map information. On both systems, songs and pictures can be ripped from a CD or loaded from a jump drive via an integrated USB port. The navigation system is offered with Sirius real-time traffic. Dodge's UC
