Introduction
The 2014 Dodge Durango large SUV has seating capacity for up to 7 passengers. A total of five trim levels are available. The Durango is offered with rear-wheel drive (RWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD), and is powered by a 6- or 8-cylinder engine mated to a new 8-speed automatic transmission. Competitors include the Chevrolet Traverse, Ford Explorer, GMC Acadia, Honda Pilot, Hyundai Santa Fe, Mazda CX-9, Nissan Pathfinder, Subaru Tribeca, Toyota Highlander, Toyota 4Runner, and the Volkswagen Touareg.

Models and Features
Serving as the lineup's entry-level model is the Durango SXT, host to an ample selection of standard amenities including fog lights, heated power-adjustable outside mirrors, 18-inch alloy wheels, tri-zone climate control, 5-inch touch-screen infotainment system with an SD card slot and USB port, second-row 60/40 and third-row 50/50 split-folding seats, and a V-6 engine.

Next is the new-for-2014 Durango Rallye, differentiated from the SXT by way of a unique grille and lower body accents, LED headlight trim, 20-inch black alloy wheels, heated power front seats and steering wheel, complimentary 1-year satellite radio subscription, and dual exhaust tips.

Also making its debut is the mid-level Limited trim level. Here, Dodge has enhanced the list of standard features with items like a 3-prong 115-volt outlet that proves handy for recharging a multitude of portable devices, memory settings, 8.4-inch touch-screen, leather upholstery, heated rear seats, and a remote start system.

Those looking for a few more creature comforts might want to direct their attention to the Durango Citadel. This premium version is equipped with a power liftgate, power tilt/slide moonroof, active high-beam headlights, rain-sensing wipers, navigation system, 506-watt audio system, heated and cooled front seats, and power tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel.

Finally, there's the 2014 Dodge Durango R/T. Unlike the Citadel, this model does less to coddle and more to excite with its standard V-8 engine and sport-tuned suspension.

Options and Packages
Dodge has ensured the availability of a 2014 Durango for most every want and need, thanks to not only the variety of trim levels, but also a considerable number of options. Among the more notable offerings are second-row captain's chairs, rear-seat Blu-Ray/DVD entertainment system, Mopar exterior upgrades, and a Technology package comprised of intelligent cruise control, forward-collision warning, and a blind-spot monitoring system with rear cross-traffic alert.

Under the Hood
As noted, with the exception of the R/T trim level, all 2014 Durangos feature a standard 6-cylinder engine, specifically a 3.6-liter V-6 that delivers 290 horsepower (295 in Rallye trim) and 260 lb.-ft. of torque, generous output that's delivered to the pavement via a new 8-speed automatic transmission with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. Buyers have the choice of RWD or a full-time AWD system that utilizes a single-speed transfer case.

Befitting its relatively sporty demeanor is the R/T's standard 5.7-liter Hemi V-8, which produces 360 horsepower and 390 lb.-ft. of torque. Again, the 8-speed gearbox is part of the deal, but in this case, the optional AWD system boasts a 2-speed transfer case that allows drivers to select a full-time setting or AWD lock for those times when an extra degree of traction is needed.

If heavy towing is on the agenda, the V-8 engine is the better choice with its 7,400-lb. capacity (in RWD form). The V-6 can handle loads weighing up to 6,200 lbs.

Fuel Economy
Additional muscle under the hood usually comes at the expense of efficiency, a point clearly evidenced by EPA fuel-economy ratings for the 2014 Dodge Durango. While RWD V-6 variants are estimated to average 18 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway, the Hemi V-8 cuts those figures to 14 and 23, respectively. In AWD guise, V-6-powered Durangos are expected to squeeze 17 miles out of each gallon of gas while traipsing around town, or 24 miles when cruising on the freeway. Pair the V-8 with AWD and the city rating holds firm at 14 mpg, but highway fuel economy slides just a bit to 22 mpg.

Safety and Ratings
In crash tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2014 Dodge Durango received an overall rating of 4 (out of 5) stars. In tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the 2014 Durango received a rating of "Good"--the Institute's highest--for front-impact crash protection.

In terms of equipment, the 2014 Durango is equipped with ready alert braking, 6 air bags, and trailer sway control. Limited, Citadel and R/T versions add rear park-assist sensors, rearview camera, and a security system, while standard auto-leveling HID headlights are reserved for the Durango's two highest trim levels.
