Overview
Dodge revives the classic Challenger nameplate for 2008 as a competitor for the Ford Mustang. Offered as a 2-door coupe, the 2008 Dodge Challenger will only be available as a limited-edition, high-performance SRT8 model. Dodge intends to build 6400 examples before switching to an expanded 2009 lineup that will add a smaller V-8 engine model, a V-6 engine model, and an available manual transmission. Each 2008 Challenger comes with a limited-edition numbered dash plaque. The Challenger is offered only with RWD and has seating for 5. A convertible model is rumored to be in the works as well.

Model Lineup
The 2008 Dodge Challenger is offered only as a high-performance SRT8 model. Standard equipment includes leather upholstery; 8-way power adjustable driver's seat; heated front seats with lumbar adjustment; 60/40-split folding rear bench seat; air conditioning; cruise control; Dodge's Kicker AM/FM stereo with 6-disc CD changer, 13 speakers, 322-watt amplifier, 200-watt subwoofer, and auxiliary input jack; Sirius satellite radio with one-year subscription; power windows; power heated mirrors; power door locks; remote keyless entry; Keyless Go push-button starting; tilt/telescoping steering column; Dodge's UConnect hands-free cell phone link; auto-dimming rearview mirror; universal garage door opener; Xenon automatic headlights; leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls; leather-wrapped shift knob; limited-slip differential; electronic vehicle information center with Dodge's Reconfigurable Display; universal garage door opener; Brembo brakes; 180-mph speedometer; black rear spoiler; fog lamps; and P245/45ZR20 all-season performance tires on polished aluminum wheels. Options include a sunroof, P255/45ZR20 rear tires, and Dodge's MyGIG Multimedia Infotainment system with a navigation system and hard-drive radio. Three colors are offered: Brilliant Black Crystal Pearl Coat, Bright Silver Metallic, and Hemi Orange, all with dark "carbon fiber-like" racing stripes.

Powertrain
Under the hood, the 2008 Dodge Challenger features the overhead-valve 6.1-liter Hemi V-8 engine that Chrysler LLC uses for the SRT8 versions of the Dodge Charger, Dodge Magnum, Chrysler 300 and Jeep Grand Cherokee. It cranks out 425 hp at 6000 rpm and 420 lb.-ft. of torque at 4800 rpm. Dodge says the 6.1-liter V-8 engine motivates the Challenger SRT8 from 0-60 mph in 4.9 seconds and through the quarter-mile in less than 14 seconds. It is mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission with Dodge's AutoStick manual shiftgate. Fuel economy comes in at an EPA-estimated 13 mpg city/18 mpg highway. The Challenger rides on a shortened version of the Charger's LX platform. It has independent suspension at all four corners, and Dodge says the steering is performance-tuned.

Safety
The 2008 Dodge Challenger SRT8 comes standard with advanced multi-stage front air bags; head-protecting curtain side air bags that cover both seating rows; tire-pressure monitor; anti-lock brakes with brake assist; traction control; and electronic stability control. The 2008 Dodge Challenger has not yet been crash tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Technology
Standard on the 2008 Challenger SRT8 is Dodge's "Reconfigurable Display." Located in the vehicle information center, this feature displays what Dodge calls "performance pages." It can provide readouts of lateral and longitudinal G forces, 1/8- and 1/4-mile time and speed, 0-60 mph time, and braking distance. Dodge's MyGIG Multimedia Infotainment system can be controlled through a 6.5-inch touch-screen or by voice commands. It has a 30-gigabyte hard drive that stores music and picture files, as well as map information for the built-in navigation system. The navigation system is available with real-time traffic through Sirius satellite radio. Dodge says the hard drive can hold up to 4500 songs. Gracenotes file management software adds song, artist and album information to the music files. A voice-memo recorder feature is also included.
