The 2012 Caliber is Dodge's entry-level model: a front-wheel drive, compact, 5-door hatchback available in three trims. The base SE trim runs on 15-inch steel wheels; the SXT uses 17-inch alloy wheels, fog lights, chrome grille, and a firmer suspension; the SXT Plus features 18-inch alloy wheels with performance tires, sport suspension, and upgraded exterior detailing.
The SE trim includes cloth upholstery, air conditioning, cruise control, keyless entry, rear cargo cover, Bluetooth connectivity, 4-speaker sound system, and some power accessories. The SXT adds additional power accessories and a fold-flat passenger seat. The SXT Plus features upgraded cloth upholstery and other interior styling upgrades.
Seventeen-inch wheels are optional on the SE trim. The SXT and SXT Plus offer several option packages: Driver Convenience (heated front seats and more informational displays); Security (anti-lock brakes, alarm, remote ignition, oil cooler, hill-start assist, and other features); sunroof; navigation system; and touch-screen interface for the sound system. An upgraded sound system is available with the SXT Plus.
Under the Hood
The Dodge Caliber's standard power plant is a 2.0-liter, 158-horsepower 4-cylinder engine that works with a 5-speed manual transmission or optional continuously variable transmission (CVT). The CVT is standard on the SXT trim.
EPA fuel-economy figures for the 2012 Dodge Caliber are:
- Caliber with manual transmission: 24/32/27 mpg (city/highway/combined)
- Caliber with CVT: 23/27/24 mpg
Standard safety features on the 2012 Dodge Caliber include front disc/rear drum brakes that upgrade to 4-wheel disc brakes on the SXT Plus, and optional front-seat side air bags.
In government crash tests, the 2012 Caliber received a rating of 4 (out of 5) stars for front impact, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA); 3 stars for side protection; and 3 stars overall. In tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the Caliber received a "Good" rating--the Institute's highest--for the frontal-offset test; "Marginal" for side impact; and "Acceptable" for roof strength.
