Introduction
The 2014 Dodge Avenger is a front-wheel-drive (FWD) midsize sedan available in three trim levels and powered by a 4- or 6-cylinder engine. Competitors include the Chevrolet Malibu, Chrysler 200, Ford Fusion, Honda Accord, Hyundai Sonata, Kia Optima, Mazda 6, Nissan Altima, Subaru Legacy, Toyota Camry, and the Volkswagen Passat.

Models and Features
Serving as the Avenger's entry-level model, the SE covers the basics with 17-inch steel wheels, the usual powered amenities, tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel with integrated audio controls, cruise control, 60/40 split-folding rear seat, and a 1-year subscription for satellite radio service.

A few upgrades and extra creature comforts accompany a move up to the Avenger SXT trim level. Specifically, this variant is home to fog lights, heated mirrors, 17-inch alloy wheels, automatic climate control, LED interior lighting, leather trim, power-adjustable driver's seat with 8-way adjustment, and a premium sound system.

Positioned at the top of the Avenger range is the sporty R/T, distinguished by its dual exhaust tips, body-color grille, 18-inch alloy wheels, auto-dimming rearview mirror, leather upholstery, two-toned interior, Bluetooth connectivity, heated front seats, and 6.5-inch touch-screen infotainment system. The R/T is further separated from the SE and SXT courtesy of a remote start system and a performance-tuned suspension.

Options and Packages
Dodge has created a small selection of options for its 2014 Avenger SE model, including Bluetooth connectivity, heated front seats, and the remote start system. Those add-ons are shared with the mid-level SXT, which can also be fitted with a Rallye Appearance Group package that mimics the R/T's look with 18-inch alloy wheels, body-color grille, and available two-tone interior.

The assortment of options goes on to include a Sun and Sound Group package for the SXT and R/T. Content includes a power tilt/slide moonroof, navigation system, 6.5-inch touch-screen display (SXT), and Bluetooth streaming audio.

Under the Hood
Given its relatively athletic demeanor, one might expect the 2014 Dodge Avenger R/T to be fitted with the lineup's most potent engine, which is indeed the case. Drivers of the R/T will be working with a 3.6-liter V-6 engine that delivers 283 horsepower and 260 lb.-ft. of torque, output that's managed by a 6-speed automatic transmission with manual shift control.

SE and SXT versions of the Avenger can be upgraded with the 6-cylinder, but their standard engine is a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder producing 173 horsepower and 166 lb.-ft. of torque. Buyers who opt for the Avenger SE will get a 4-speed automatic transmission, whereas those who select the Avenger SXT get the 6-speed gearbox.

Fuel Economy
EPA fuel-economy estimates for the 2014 Dodge Avenger are:
  • Avenger with 4-cylinder engine and 4-speed automatic transmission: 21/30/24 mpg (city/highway/combined)
  • Avenger with 4-cylinder engine and 6-speed automatic transmission: 20/31/24 mpg
  • Avenger with V-6 engine and 6-speed automatic transmission: 19/29/22 mpg
