Overview
The original Avenger, offered from 1995 to 2000, was the 2-door coupe version of Dodge's midsize Stratus sedan. The Avenger gave way to a full Stratus lineup of coupes and sedans for 2001. The Stratus continued through the 2006 model year, then was replaced as Dodge's midsize sedan by the reborn Avenger for 2008. The Avenger shares its basic design with the Chrysler Sebring, and offers the same three engines (including two V-6 engines). With styling that bears more than a passing resemblance to its big brother, the Charger, the Avenger is designed to bring the attitude of Dodge models like the Charger, Nitro and Ram to the 4-door family sedan.

Model Lineup
The 2009 Dodge Avenger is offered in SE, SXT and R/T trim levels. The 4-cylinder SE features cloth upholstery; power windows, mirrors and locks; remote keyless entry; air conditioning; interior air filter; tilt/telescoping steering column; 4-speaker AM/FM/CD/MP3 stereo; Sirius satellite radio; cruise control; Chill Zone cooled glove box; 60/40 split-folding rear seat; and P215/65R16 tires on steel wheels with wheel covers. The SXT adds stain-resistant seat fabric; 8-way power driver's seat with lumbar adjustment; fold-flat front passenger seat; leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob; fog lights; rear spoiler; and P215/60R17 tires on alloy wheels. The options list includes a 2.7-liter V-6 engine; firmer Touring suspension; sunroof; UConnect Phone wireless cell phone link; UConnect Tunes hard-drive radio; UConnect GPS hard-drive radio with navigation system; P215/55R18 tires on alloy wheels; rear DVD entertainment system; and a Convenience package (automatic headlights; automatic climate control; heated seats; heated and cooled front cupholder; heated exterior mirrors; remote engine starting; auto-dimming rearview mirror; electronic vehicle information center; and a universal garage door opener).

In addition to the SXT's standard equipment, the top-of-the-line Avenger R/T gets a 3.5-liter V-6 engine; heated body-color mirrors; automatic climate control; auto-dimming rearview mirror; 6-disc CD/MP3 player; automatic headlights; sport-tuned suspension; performance steering; and P215/55R18 tires on alloy wheels. Options over and above those of the SXT include UConnect GPS with a 276-watt Boston Acoustics sound system; and a Premium Interior package with heated leather seats, remote engine starting, universal garage door opener, electronic vehicle information center, heated and cooled cupholder, leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a cargo organizer.

Powertrain
The 2009 Dodge Avenger SE's 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine produces 173 hp at 6000 rpm and 166 lb.-ft. of torque at 4400 rpm. EPA mileage figures are 21 mpg city/30 mpg highway. The Avenger SXT offers an optional 2.7-liter V-6 engine with 186 hp at 5500 rpm and 191 lb.-ft. of torque at 4000 rpm. This flex-fuel engine can run on ethanol blends up to E85. EPA fuel-economy estimates (on gasoline) are 19 mpg city/27 mpg highway. The 2.4- and 2.7- liter engines employ a 4-speed automatic transmission to drive the front wheels. The Avenger R/T's 3.5-liter V-6 engine puts out 235 hp at 6400 rpm and 232 lb.-ft. of torque at 4000 rpm. It is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission with Auto Stick manual shift capability. EPA fuel-economy estimates are 16 mpg city/26 mpg highway. All 2009 Avenger engines and transmissions are covered by Dodge's lifetime powertrain warranty.

The 2009 Dodge Avenger uses MacPhereson struts up front and a multi-link independent suspension in the rear. Models with the 2.7-liter engine get a firmer Touring suspension, and the R/T models get even sportier suspension tuning, as well as quicker "performance" steering.

Safety
Driver and passenger front air bags; torso-protecting front side air bags; and head-protecting, 2-row, side curtain air bags are standard on all Avengers, as is a tire-pressure monitor. The SE model has front disc and rear drum brakes. SXT and R/T models have anti-lock 4-wheel disc brakes. Traction control and electronic stability control with brake assist are optional for the SXT and R/T.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has awarded the Avenger 5-star ratings for both front and rear passengers in frontal crash tests, 5 stars for the driver and 4 stars for rear-seat occupants in side crash tests, and a 4-star rating for rollover resistance. In tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the Avenger has received "Good" ratings (the Institute's highest) for frontal offset and side-impact crash protection, and an "Acceptable" rating for rear crash protection.

Technology
The optional UConnect Tunes and UConnect GPS systems for the 2009 Dodge Avenger include a 30-gigabyte hard drive that holds music and picture files, which can be ripped from a CD or copied via the stereo's built-in USB port. UConnect GPS adds a navigation system with voice activation and real-time traffic. A built-in copy of the GraceNotes CD database allows the stereo to automatically detect and display artist and track information. UConnect Phone provides hands-free Bluetooth phone compatibility with voice dialing. When the optional rear-seat DVD player is ordered, front-seat occupants can watch movies via the navigation system's screen when the vehicle's transmission is in park. The Avenger also can keep your coffee hot and your iced tea cool with an available front cupholder that can heat up to 140 degrees F and cool down to 35 degrees F.
