Overview
Launched in 1995 as a coupe, in 1996 as a convertible, and in 2001 as a sedan, the Chrysler Sebring was completely redesigned for 2007. The Sebring is currently offered as a 4-door-sedan and a 2-door-convertible, both built on Chrysler's D platform. The Sebring convertible is offered with a choice of three power tops: vinyl, cloth or retractable hardtop. The folded roof disappears in the car's trunk, leaving enough room for two golf bags, Chrysler says. An AWD model was offered for 2008, but is discontinued for 2009. Chrysler says it has improved the acoustics package for 2009 to reduce noise levels in the cabin.

Model Lineup
The 2009 Chrysler Sebring is available as a sedan or convertible, both with the same three engine choices and three trim levels: LX, Touring and Limited. Standard features on the LX sedan include cloth upholstery; air conditioning; interior air filter; tilt/telescoping steering wheel; cruise control; driver's seat height and lumbar adjustments; 60/40-split folding rear seat; power windows, mirrors and door locks; remote keyless entry; 4-speaker AM/FM stereo with 6-disc CD changer; Sirius satellite radio; outside-temperature indicator; and P215/65R16 tires on steel wheels with wheel covers. The LX convertible loses the split-folding rear seat but gains 6-speaker audio and 6-way power front seats. The Touring sedan adds to the LX sedan automatic headlights; heated power exterior mirrors; 8-way power driver's seat; fold-flat front passenger seat; leather-wrapped shift knob and steering wheel with audio controls; aimable LED map lights; 6-speaker audio; stain-resistant seat fabric; Touring suspension; and P215/60R17 tires on aluminum wheels. The Touring convertible has the same equipment plus a trip computer and electronic vehicle information center. To the Touring sedan, the Limited sedan adds leather upholstery; auto-dimming rearview mirror; electronic vehicle information center; trip computer; fog lamps; heated front seats; heated and cooled front cupholder; remote engine starting; universal garage door opener; trunk cargo organizer; UConnect Phone hands-free cell phone link; security alarm; and a premium Boston Acoustics sound system. The Limited convertible also has automatic climate control and P215/55R18 tires on alloy wheels.

Options include a sunroof; UConnect Tunes with a 30-gigabyte hard drive to hold music and picture files; and UConnect GPS, which adds a navigation system with voice activation to UConnect Tunes.

Powertrain
The standard engine for most 2009 Chrysler Sebring models is a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder World Engine rated at 173 hp at 6000 rpm and 166 lb.-ft. of torque at 4400 rpm; EPA fuel-economy estimates are 21 mpg city/30 mpg highway for the sedan and 20 mpg city/29 mpg highway for the convertible. The Touring models offer a larger 2.7-liter V-6 engine rated at 186 hp at 5500 rpm and 191 lb.-ft. of torque at 4000 rpm. This flexible-fuel engine can operate on any blend of gasoline and fuel-grade ethanol up to E85. EPA fuel-economy estimates for the flex-fuel engine are 19 mpg city/27 mpg highway for the sedan and 18 mpg city/26 mpg highway for the convertible. The 2.4- and 2.7-liter engines are mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission. The most powerful engine is offered on the Sebring Limited models. It is a 3.5-liter V-6 powerplant rated at 235 hp at 6400 rpm and 232 lb.-ft. of torque at 4000 rpm. It uses a 6-speed automatic transmission with Chrysler's AutoStick manual shiftgate. EPA fuel-economy estimates for the 3.5-liter V-6 engine are 16 mpg city/26 mpg highway for either body style. The basic limited warranty on the 2009 Sebring is 3 years/36,000 miles. In addition, Chrysler provides a lifetime powertrain warranty to all original owners.

Safety
The 2009 Chrysler Sebring sedan is equipped with driver and front-passenger low-risk deployment frontal air bags; front-seat-mounted (thorax) side air bags; and head-protecting curtain side air bags for outboard occupants in both seating rows. The Sebring convertible features driver and front-passenger low-risk deployment frontal air bags and front-seat-mounted (thorax) side air bags. Anti-lock brakes (ABS) are standard equipment on all models. Traction control and electronic stability control are standard on Touring and Limited models, and are not available for the LX. The infant/child seat Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren (LATCH) system is standard.

In tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the Chrysler Sebring sedan has earned 5-star ratings for the driver and front passenger in front-impact crash tests; a 5-star rating for the driver and a 4-star rating for the rear passenger in side-impact testing; and a 4-star rollover-resistance rating. The convertible earns a 4-star rating for the driver and a 5-star rating for the front passenger in the front-impact test; 5-star ratings for the driver and rear passenger in side impacts; and a 4-star rollover-resistance rating. In Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) testing, both the Sebring sedan and convertible earn "Good" ratings for frontal-offset and side-impact protection. In rear crash tests, the sedan gets an "Acceptable" rating and the convertible a "Marginal" rating.

Technology
The 2009 Chrysler Sebring sedan and convertible are available with UConnect Tunes and UConnect GPS. Both combine information and entertainment, and UConnect GPS adds a navigation system. Centered on a 6.5-inch Thin Film Transistor (TFT) display with touch-screen capability, both versions use a 30-gigabyte hard-drive and can be controlled with voice-activated commands to manage audio, movies, personalized pictures, and with UConnect GPS, navigation functions. Sirius satellite radio and Bluetooth technology are standard. Some of the features of these systems include a microphone integrated into the rearview mirror to allow three-minute voice memos to be recorded, DVD movies to be played on the unit at speeds below 5 mph, and JPEG pictures to be displayed on the screen. A Universal Serial Bus (USB) connection provides MP3 connectivity and downloading of WMA, MP3 and JPEG files onto the hard drive.
