Overview
Chrysler added the midsize Aspen SUV for the 2007 model year. Like the Dodge Durango on which it's based, the Aspen is larger than most midsize SUVs and competes more directly with full-size SUVs such as the Chevy Tahoe and Toyota Sequoia. Standard seating is for 8 with front bucket seats and folding bench seats in the second and third rows. Aspen features two V-8 engine choices, one of which gets more power for 2008. Rear- or all-wheel drive (RWD or AWD) are offered. Chrysler will add an Aspen Hybrid in mid-2008 as a 2009 model.

Model Lineup
The 2008 Chrysler Aspen's AWD system has a 2-speed transfer case with low-range gearing. Standard features include front and rear air conditioning; tilt steering wheel with audio controls; cruise control; cloth upholstery; front bucket seats; 8-way power driver's seat; second-row 40/20/40 split folding seat; third-row 60/40 split folding seat; heated power mirrors; power windows and locks; remote keyless entry; 4-speaker Alpine AM/FM/CD stereo with an auxiliary input jack and Sirius satellite radio; universal garage door opener; automatic headlights; theft-deterrent system; fog lights; roof rails; and P265/60R18 on-/off-road tires on alloy wheels. A power rear liftgate is standard on AWD models.

Options include dual-zone automatic climate control; leather upholstery; sunroof; heated front seats; power-adjustable pedals; Chrysler's MyGIG Entertainment System with hard-drive radio; P265/50R20 tires on chromed alloy wheels; rear DVD entertainment system; remote engine starting; Chrysler's UConnect wireless cell phone link; and a towing package. Chrysler's MyGIG Entertainment System is new for 2008. It includes a 6.5-inch touch screen and a 20-gigabyte hard drive to hold songs and pictures. Also offered is Chrysler's MyGIG Multimedia Infotainment System, which adds a navigation system with real-time traffic and voice activation.

Powertrain
The 2008 Chrysler Aspen comes standard with a 4.7-liter V-8 engine that has been upgraded from 235 hp and 300 lb.-ft. or torque to 303 hp at 5650 rpm and 330 lb.-ft. of torque at 3950 rpm. Chrysler's 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 engine is optional. It produces 335 hp at 5200 rpm and 370 lb.-ft. of torque at 4200 rpm. The Hemi has Chrysler's Multiple Displacement System, which shuts down four cylinders when cruising to conserve fuel. A 5-speed automatic transmission comes mated to either engine. The EPA fuel economy rating with the 4.7-liter engine is 13 mpg city/18 mpg highway. The 5.7-liter V-8 engine has the same numbers with AWD, but gets 13 mpg city/19 mpg highway with RWD.

For models equipped with the 4.7-liter V-8 engine and AWD, a single-speed transfer case provides AWD and AWD "high" operating modes. A 2-speed transfer case is standard with the available 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 engine that features an AWD mode and AWD "high" and "low" modes.

Safety
Standard safety features on the 2008 Chrysler Aspen include dual-stage front air bags and head-protecting curtain side air bags that have rollover sensors and cover all three seating rows. Also standard are a tire-pressure monitor; anti-lock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist; Chrysler's Trailer Sway Control; traction control; and electronic stability control with rollover mitigation. Rear park assist is standard on all-wheel-drive models, and, for 2008, Chrysler offers a rear backup camera as an option.

Technology
Chrysler's Trailer Sway Control monitors the vehicle's intended path and uses a yaw sensor to detect sway. It reduces engine torque and works with the anti-lock brake system to apply brakes to individual wheels to keep the vehicle on its intended path when towing, Chrysler says.
