For 2006, the Chrysler 300C SRT8, the high-performance variant, is available in a new Silver Steel exterior color. Also new is a standard tire pressure-monitoring system, an available Kicker brand high-performance audio system, and an available rear-seat video system. New 17-inch machined aluminum wheels replace the painted aluminum wheels on the 2006 Chrysler 300 Touring model. For the rest of the 300 line, there are no significant changes.
In 1955, Chrysler dropped a 300-hp, dual-quad HEMI engine into its 300 sedan, creating the first 300C, and what could be considered the beginning of the Muscle Car Era. Today, the reincarnated 300 is available in five trim levels: Base 300, 300 Touring, 300 Limited, 300C, and 300C STR8. The base 300 features a rear-wheel-drive configuration and a 2.7L V-6 engine that provides 190 hp through a four-speed automatic transmission. The 300 Touring and Limited feature a 250-hp, 3.5L V-6 engine and a five-speed automatic transmission with AutoStick and either rear- or all-wheel drive. Opting for the 300C brings the 5.7L HEMI V-8 with Multiple Displacement System (that deactivates four cylinders when cruising), a five-speed automatic transmission with AutoStick, and either rear- or all-wheel drive. The top dog, the 300C SRT8, is fitted with a 340-hp HEMI V-8 sending 390 lb.-ft. of torque to the rear wheels via a five-speed automatic with AutoStick. Safety features include dual-front, multi-stage, and side-curtain air bags; anti-lock brakes with brake assist; traction control; electronic stability control; high intensity discharge (HID) headlamps; and a tire pressure-monitoring system.
Standard features on the Chrysler 300 are numerous, and they include 17-inch wheels and tires; AM/FM/CD stereo with an auxiliary audio input jack and four speakers; driver and passenger adjustable lumbar support; driver-side one-touch-down power windows; power eight-way driver's seat; power four-wheel disc brakes; rear 60/40 split seat with armrest and cup holder; remote keyless/illuminated entry; Sentry Key engine immobilizer system, solar control window glass, and cruise control. The 300 Touring model adds stability control, traction control, four-wheel ABS with Brake Assist, body-color heated mirrors, fog lamps, and leather trim on the seats, steering wheel, and shift knob. The Limited package adds 17-inch chrome alloy wheels, automatic headlamps, driver and passenger one-touch up/down power front windows, dual zone climate control, Electronic Vehicle Information Center, and HomeLink universal transceiver. The Limited also comes with heated front seats, power eight-way front passenger seat, six-speaker audio system, and steering-wheel-mounted audio controls.
Opting for the 300C adds 18-inch chrome alloy wheels, Boston Acoustics audio system with six speakers and a 276-watt digital amplifier, dual bright exhaust tips, power tilt/telescoping steering column, premium leather trim, halogen headlamps, rain-sensing wipers, tortoise shell-style interior accents, and memory for the driver's seat, steering column position, and pedals. The 300C SRT8 offers power-adjustable sport seats up front, fitted with performance suede inserts and heat and memory functions. The steering wheel, shifter, and door pulls are covered with "technical" leather trim, and there's a special finish on the steering wheel, door pulls, door trim, and center stack.
The Chrysler 300 competes in the Large Conventional segment along with 13 other vehicles. Similar to the Midsize Conventional segment, value is the name of the game in this segment.
The Chrysler 300, with 144,048 sales in calendar year 2005, was the sales leader in the segment, according to the J.D. Power and Associates Sales Report,SM trailing only the Chevrolet Impala (246,481 units in 2005). Not far behind the Chrysler 300 are the Pontiac Grand Prix (122,398), Ford Five Hundred (107,932), and Toyota Avalon (95,318). Rounding out the top ten in sales are the Nissan Maxima, Mercury Grand Marquis, Ford Crown Victoria, and two platform-mates to the 300-the Dodge Magnum and Charger.
