Under the Hood
The front-wheel-drive Volt is powered by an electric motor rated at 149 horsepower, drawing power from a lithium-ion battery pack. Once the battery's capacity drops to 30%, a 1.4-liter 4-cylinder gasoline engine rated at 80 horsepower engages and takes over as the power source for the electric motor. In some high-speed conditions, the gasoline engine may also send power directly to the drive wheels. The Volt's battery is charged via either a 120-volt or 240-volt outlet, and can be fully recharged in 10 hours and 4 hours, respectively, according to Chevy.
EPA fuel-economy figures for the 2012 Chevrolet Volt are:
- In electric-only mode: 95/93/94 mpg equivalent (city/highway/combined)
- Using gasoline only: 35/40/37 mpg (city/highway/combined)
- Battery range, electric only: 36 miles
- Cruising range, gasoline only: 325.5/372 miles (city/highway)
Standard safety features on the 2012 Chevrolet Volt include anti-lock brakes, front-seat side air bags, knee air bags, and full-length side curtain air bags.
In government tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the Volt received 5 (out of 5) stars overall for crash protection. In tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the Volt received a "Good" rating--the Institute's highest--for frontal-offset and side-impact crash protection.
