Introduction
Substantially updated for the 2013 model year, the Chevy Traverse is a full-size, 3-row crossover SUV that competes with family SUVs that are usually smaller inside than it is. Key competitors include the Dodge Durango, Ford Explorer, Honda Pilot, Mazda CX-9, Nissan Pathfinder, and Toyota Highlander.

Models and Features
The 2014 Chevy Traverse is sold in LS, LT, and LTZ trim levels, with the LT split into 1LT and 2LT sub-trims.

Standard equipment for the Traverse LS includes 8-passenger seating, front and rear air conditioning, power windows, power blind-spot side mirrors, power door locks with remote keyless entry, tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, and cruise control. Bluetooth connectivity is standard, as well as a color touch-screen radio with satellite radio, an auxiliary audio input jack, USB port, and a reversing camera. Automatic headlights and dark-tinted rear privacy glass are included for this trim level, which rides on 17-inch steel wheels with plastic bolt-on wheel covers.

The Traverse 1LT trim level adds 18-inch aluminum wheels, fog lights, heated side mirrors, body-color exterior trim, variable-effort steering, and rear park-assist sensors. Remote vehicle starting is also standard for this trim level, which includes a leather-wrapped steering wheel, 8-way power driver's seat, and a front center air bag that deploys from between the front seats.

The Traverse 2LT adds 7-passenger seating with second-row captain's chairs, heated front seats, automatic triple-zone climate control, and a Chevrolet MyLink radio with a premium sound system. Additionally, this SUV includes rear-seat audio controls and headphone jacks, universal home remote, auto-dimming interior and exterior mirrors, and a power liftgate.

The Traverse LTZ is equipped with 20-inch aluminum wheels, dual exhaust system, and chrome exterior trim accents. Inside, this version gets perforated leather upholstery, an 8-way power front passenger's seat, heated and ventilated front seats, heated steering wheel, and memory for the driver's settings. Side blind-zone alert safety technology is standard for this trim level, along with rear cross-traffic alert, forward-collision alert, and lane-departure warning systems.

Options and Packages
Any 2014 Chevy Traverse can be upgraded with all-wheel drive, an engine block heater, and a Towing package that bumps trailer-towing capacity to 5,200 pounds. Additionally, several dealer-installed options are available.

Few factory options are offered for the Traverse LS, which can be equipped with a power driver's seat and a center air bag.

The Traverse 1LT and 2LT trim levels are available with premium paint colors, greater interior fabric choice, Dual SkyScape sunroof, premium surround-sound audio system, and a factory-installed rear-seat entertainment system. An All-Star Edition package (20-inch wheels, Chevrolet MyLink radio, universal home remote) is available for the Traverse 1LT, while the 2LT can be upgraded with leather, navigation system, and both forward-collision alert and lane-departure warning systems.

Notably, the side blind-zone alert and rear cross-traffic alert systems remain exclusive to the Traverse LTZ. Additionally, the LTZ can be optioned with premium paint colors, a Dual SkyScape sunroof, navigation, surround sound, and a rear-seat entertainment system.

Under the Hood
A direct-injection, 3.6-liter V-6 engine is standard for all Traverse models, and it powers the front wheels through a 6-speed automatic transmission. When installed under the hood of the LS and LT trim levels, this engine generates 281 horsepower at 6,300 rpm and 266 lb.-ft. of torque at 3,400 rpm. The Traverse LTZ has a dual exhaust system that helps improve power output to 288 horsepower and 270 lb.-ft of torque. All-wheel drive (AWD) is optional on all Traverse models.

Fuel Economy
With front-wheel drive, the 2014 Traverse is rated to return 17 mpg in the city, 24 mpg on the highway, and 19 mpg in combined driving. Add the optional AWD system, and the numbers are 16 mpg city/23 mpg highway with a 19 mpg combined rating.

Safety Ratings and Technology
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2014 Traverse receives a 5-star overall crash-test rating, the highest possible. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) had not provided official ratings for the 2014 Traverse as this overview was written.

Every Traverse is equipped with a free 6-month subscription to OnStar telematics, which includes Automatic Crash Response. This feature activates if the SUV's air bags deploy, putting occupants in touch with an emergency services operator who can speed rescuers to the Traverse's exact location.

For 2014, new forward-collision warning and lane-departure warning systems are optional for the Traverse 2LT and standard for the Traverse LTZ. Side blind-zone alert and rear cross-traffic alert systems remain exclusive to the Traverse LTZ, on which they are standard equipment.
