Introduced at the 2008 Chicago Auto Show
, the 2009 Chevrolet Traverse is an all-new crossover SUV with the upscale design, standard features, and people- and cargo-hauling capability found in many larger SUVs. It boasts a design inspired by the current-generation Malibu and comes with a full array of standard safety features like electronic stability and traction control, 4-wheel ABS, and six air bags. Adults can comfortably sit in the third row, while there's still plenty of storage available behind the seats (26.1 cubic feet). With both second- and third-row seats folded, there's 117.9 cubic feet of cargo volume. Competition includes the Toyota Highlander
, Honda Pilot
and Ford Explorer
. Traverse production begins in the third quarter of 2008 in GM's Spring Hill, Tenn., manufacturing facility.Model Lineup
The 2009 Chevrolet Traverse will be offered in three models: LS, LT and LTZ, in both FWD and intelligent AWD. The extensive list of product highlights includes: 4-wheel independent suspension; electronic stability control; traction control; 17-, 18- and 20-inch wheels; second-row Smart Slide seat feature; rear-seat entertainment system; six standard air bags; Bluetooth connectivity; OnStar 8.0; and XM satellite radio.
The Traverse, which can be configured for seven or eight adults, features chrome-ringed grille inserts, wraparound single-piece fascias, large wheel-and-tire combinations, taut body lines and tight tolerances between body components. Other design details include front bucket seats; 60/40-split second-row bench (for three passengers) or two second-row captain's chairs, and a 60/40-split third-row bench seat; turn signals integrated in the outside mirrors; roof rails; rear spoiler integrated over the tailgate window; roof rails for sleek appearance; dual bright exhausts; 20-inch Ultra-Bright aluminum wheels (standard on LTZ); and a panoramic power sunroof.
Options on the all-new, 2009 Chevrolet Traverse include perforated leather seats; second-row captain's chairs; power liftgate; extended-range remote vehicle start; power folding outside mirrors; heated, power-adjustable outside mirrors; rear ultrasonic parking assist; heated windshield fluid; and heated and cooled front seats.Powertrain
Power for the all-new 2009 Chevrolet Traverse comes from a 3.6-liter V-6 dual-overhead cam (DOHC) engine with variable valve timing (VVT) and direct fuel injection. The engine produces an SAE-certified 281 hp at 6400 rpm and 253 lb.-ft. of torque at 5500 rpm with single exhaust, and 288 hp at 6300 rpm and 270 lb.-ft. of torque at 3400 rpm with dual exhaust. The engine is mated to a fuel-saving Hydra-Matic 6T75 6-speed automatic transmission with clutch-to-clutch shift operation for FWD and intelligent AWD models. The Traverse's engine and transmission combination result in a 25-percent reduction in cold-start emissions, according to Chevy. EPA fuel-economy estimates are 17 mpg city/24 mpg highway (FWD) and 16 mpg city/23 mpg highway (AWD).
The Traverse features a 4-wheel independent suspension system with MacPherson front strut design and compact, state-of-the-art linked "H" design rear suspension. Brakes are standard 4-wheel disc with ABS. The Traverse also features electronic traction control and electronic stability control with rollover mitigation. Standard electronic braking features include dynamic rear proportioning, hydraulic brake boost, and panic brake assist. A tire-pressure-monitoring system is also standard.Safety
The 2009 Chevrolet Traverse comes equipped with a full array of standard safety features, including six standard air bags: two dual-stage frontal air bags for the driver and front passenger; two pelvic-thorax seat-mounted side air bags in the first row (providing improved occupant coverage over thorax side air bags); and two head curtain side-impact air bags covering all three seating rows. Chevy says the head curtain side air bags are among the longest air bags in any production vehicle. Other standard safety features include the GM rollover sensing system; dual front safety belt pre-tensioners (with new anchors and retractors); and OnStar Generation 8.0 (with one-year Directions & Connections plan), featuring Bluetooth-enabled hands-free calling, Turn-by-Turn Navigation and GM's Advanced Crash Response System.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA
), the 2009 Chevrolet Traverse achieves perfect 5-star ratings for both driver and passengers in frontal and side-impact tests. In the agency's rollover testing, the Traverse receives 4 stars. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS
) has named the Chevy Traverse (along with sister nameplates, GMC Acadia
, Buick Enclave
and Saturn Outlook
) as a 2008 "Top Safety Pick." The achievement comes as a result of the SUV's outstanding performance (achieving "Good" ratings) in the Institute's front-, side- and rear-impact crash tests, and the fact that the vehicle has standard electronic stability control.Technology
The 2009 Chevrolet Traverse aims to accommodate consumers' needs for technology features, and includes as standard or optional equipment: standard OnStar 8.0 with available Bluetooth-enabled hands-free calling; available Destination Download; XM satellite radio with available real-time NavTraffic feature; DVD entertainment system; DVD navigation system (with OnStar Destination Download or eNav and XM NavTraffic); optional rear ultrasonic parking assist; two rearview cameras; and extended-range remote vehicle start.
