While the Chevrolet Tahoe was all-new in 2007 and carryover in 2008, there are still quite a few changes for 2009. New is a 6-speed automatic transmission with all 5.3-liter and 6.2-liter engines; enhancements to the LTZ model; new luxury package for 2LT models; optional new backup camera display in the inside mirror; and a side blind-zone alert system is now available on LTZ models. A variety of technology and powertrain enhancements also play big in the 2009 Tahoe, including Bluetooth wireless phone connectivity and 50-percent greater city fuel economy for the Tahoe Hybrid. Chevy also adds an XFE model in the fourth quarter of 2008 that will get one mile per gallon more in city/highway fuel economy.

Model Lineup
The 2009 Chevrolet Tahoe comes in five models: LS, LT, LTZ and Hybrid, and new XFE, with 2WD and 4-wheel drive (4WD). New for 2009 are cloth seat fabrics on LS and 1LT models; standard 3-passenger third-row seat; integrated brake controller; OnStar 8.0; Bluetooth connectivity, XM satellite radio with real-time NavTraffic; fuel-saving 3.08 axle on 2WD models equipped with a 5.3-liter V-8 engine; and optional heavy-duty trailering package with a 3.42 axle ratio.

Enhancements to the LTZ model for 2009 include: heated/cooled 12-way power seats with perforated leather; new body-side moldings with chrome accent; new rear fascia with chrome accent and trailer hitch cover; brushed metal steering wheel trim plate; new sill plates with "Chevrolet" embossed logo; and Centerpoint Surround Sound Bose speaker system. The LTZ also has standard 20-inch polished aluminum wheels, with optional 20-inch chrome-clad wheels and two new exterior colors: White Diamond Tricoat and Red Jewel Tintcoat.

A new luxury package available on 2LT models includes a Bose premium speaker system; auto-dimming inside mirror and auto-dimming outside mirrors with "Razor-styled" turn signal display; power liftgate; heated second-row seats with power seat release; and heated 10-way power seats with memory. Options include two rearview camera options; navigation radio on 1LT models; Titanium and Cashmere interior on Z71 models; power-release fold-and-tumble second-row seat; remote vehicle start; driver information center; dual-zone automatic climate control; heated windshield washer fluid; RainSense wiper system; first- and second-row heated seats; Ultrasonic Rear Parking Assist; touch-screen navigation system; and a DVD rear-seat entertainment system. Available through Chevy Accessories are: three styles of 22-inch chrome wheels and seven styles of 20-inch chrome wheels; Personal Audio Link; 6-inch chrome assist steps; chrome recovery hooks/door handles/mirror caps/fuel doors; custom grille with chrome bars; grille brush guard; cat-back exhaust systems; taillamp guards; and portable DVD players.

Introduced in 2008, the 2009 Tahoe Hybrid offers city mileage improved by 50 percent over non-hybrid models, Chevy says. The Hybrid also gets adjustable power pedals and a new exterior color, Blue Granite Metallic. OnStar 8.0, XM satellite radio with NavTraffic and Bluetooth connectivity are also new for the Tahoe Hybrid for 2009.

The Z71 Off-Road appearance package is back again for 2009, and includes the Z71 Off-Road suspension with high-pressure, gas-charged monotube shocks; 18-inch on-/off-road tires; automatic-locking rear differential; front recovery hooks; skid plate; and high-capacity air cleaner. The package also has color-keyed fender flares; front fascia; satin chrome tubular assist steps; bright chrome front grille insert; and leather-trimmed bucket seats and brushed metal-look interior trim.

Chevrolet will introduce an XFE model in the fourth quarter of 2008 that will get one mile per gallon more in city and highway fuel economy than non-XFE versions. GM improves the aerodynamics by extending the front lower air dam, lowering the suspension, and revising the chassis tuning. The XFE will feature a 5.3-liter, ethanol-capable V-8 engine with aluminum cylinder block and heads.

Four small-block V-8 engines power the 2009 Chevrolet Tahoe non-hybrid lineup, while the Tahoe Hybrid features a 6.0-liter engine and GM patented 2-mode hybrid system. Standard on the 2WD non-hybrid Tahoe model is a Vortec 4.8-liter V-8 engine that provides 295 hp at 5600 rpm and 305 lb.-ft. of torque at 4800 rpm. The 4WD version gets a 5.3-liter V-8 engine with a cast iron block and cast aluminum heads, which produces 320 hp at 5200 rpm and 340 lb.-ft. of torque at 4200 rpm. A version of this engine, producing the same horsepower and torque ratings, is E-85 capable, able to run on gas, ethanol, or any combination of both. The 2009 Tahoe LTZ has a new, optional all-aluminum 6.2-liter V-8 engine with variable valve timing (VVT), rated at 395 hp at 5600 rpm and 417 lb.-ft. of torque at 4300 rpm. Transmissions include a 4-speed automatic with the 2WD base model to the new, fuel-saving 6-speed automatic with the 5.3-liter and 6.2-liter engines. The Tahoe Hybrid is powered by a 6.0-liter V-8 engine with Active Fuel Management cylinder-deactivation technology, an aluminum block and heads, late intake valve closing technology and VVT, and delivers 332 hp at 5100 rpm and 367 lb.-ft. of torque at 4100 rpm. Major components of the Tahoe Hybrid's unique powertrain system include an electronically variable transmission (EVT), Energy Storage System (ESS) and a Vortec 6.0-liter engine. The Hybrid also uses regenerative braking in concert with the vehicle's hydraulic braking system.

EPA fuel-economy estimates for the gasoline-powered 5.3-liter V-8 engine in 2WD and 4WD models are 14 mpg city/20 mpg highway and 10 mpg city/15 mpg highway (E85). The XFE model with the 5.3-liter, ethanol-capable V-8 engine is estimated to achieve 15 mpg city/21 mpg highway. The 6.2-liter V-8 engine gets an estimated 12 mpg city/19 mpg highway (gasoline) and 10 mpg city/14 mpg highway (E85). In 4WD, the numbers are the same with the exception of a 1-mpg difference in E85, to 9 mpg city/14 mpg highway. The Tahoe Hybrid's 6.0-liter engine gets an EPA-estimated 21 mpg city/22 mpg highway in 2WD and 20 mpg city/20 mpg highway with 4WD. The Hybrid can tow up to 6200 pounds in 2WD and 6000 pounds in 4WD, versus non-hybrid maximums of 8400 pounds (2WD) and 8200 pounds (4WD). The Hybrid's tires are a low-rolling-resistance compound, and the wheels differ from the regular Tahoe with the use of a lighter-weight material. The independent suspension remains unchanged, as do the standard 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes (ABS).

Chevy says the 2009 Tahoe features a "360-degree perimeter safety system." Standard safety features include dual-stage front air bags; head curtain side air bags with rollover protection for all seating rows; front-seat safety belt pre-tensioners; electronic stability control system with rollover mitigation technology; and a tire-pressure monitor.
