Overview

The Chevrolet Suburban is a full-size sport utility vehicle that was first introduced in 1935. As such, it is the longest-lived automobile nameplate still in production. The Suburban is built on a truck platform shared with the Chevrolet Tahoe, GMC Yukon and Yukon XL, Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra, and Cadillac Escalade. The chassis is a traditional body-on-frame setup designed to be rugged and carry or tow heavy loads. Now in its 10th generation, last completely redesigned for the 2007 model year, the current Suburban offers seating for up to 9 passengers in three rows. It boasts best-in-class towing capabilities, according to Chevrolet, and is offered with a long list of luxury features. Motivation comes from a standard 8-cylinder engine, with rear- or 4-wheel drive (RWD or 4WD) powertrains. Changes for 2011 are limited to new exterior colors, an integrated trailer brake controller with the towing package, and added features in two of the popular option packages.

The 2011 Chevrolet Suburban is offered in both the standard 1500 and heavier 2500 chassis. The 1500 is the regular-duty platform, while the 2500 is the heavy-duty model. In addition, there are three trim levels: LS, LT, and LTZ. The Suburban LS is configured with standard cloth upholstery, tri-zone air conditioning, full power accessories, Bluetooth phone connectivity, 8-speaker audio system, manual 50/50 folding third-row seat, steering-wheel-mounted audio controls, 17-inch alloy wheels, and more. The LT adds leather upholstery, heated outside mirrors, parking sensors, tri-zone automatic climate control, remote vehicle starting, and more. The Suburban LTZ, reserved to the 2500 chassis, has premium accessories including rear air suspension, upgraded audio, and 20-inch polished alloy wheels.

Unlike the GMC Yukon, Chevrolet Tahoe, and Cadillac Escalade, the Chevrolet Suburban is not offered with a hybrid powertrain. Instead, the Suburban is offered with a choice of two gasoline-powered engines. The standard engine is a 5.3-liter V-8 rated at 320 horsepower. The optional engine is a 6.0-liter V-8 rated at 352 horsepower. A 6-speed automatic transmission is standard. Consumers are offered a choice of rear- or 4-wheel drive (RWD or 4WD). According to Chevrolet, the Suburban 2500 is capable of towing 9,600 pounds, when properly equipped. The EPA rates the fuel economy of the 2011 Chevrolet Suburban between 10 mpg city and 21 mpg highway, depending on chassis, engine and transmission.

The 2011 Chevrolet Suburban LS 1500 2WD starts at a base price of around $41,500, and the model range tops out with the Suburban LTZ 2500 4WD, which starts at around $54,000.
