Overview
The 2008 Chevrolet Suburban is available in either half-ton (1500) or three-quarter-ton (2500) configurations, with standard rear-wheel drive (RWD) or optional 4-wheel drive (4WD), and can haul up to 9 passengers. As the Suburban was redesigned in 2007, this year's model is mostly carryover, with a few minor enhancements. Suburban shares the same platform as the GMC Yukon XL and Cadillac Escalade, as well as Chevrolet's own Tahoe.

Model Lineup
For 2008, the Chevrolet Suburban is available in 1500 (half-ton) or 2500 (three-quarter-ton) models and various trim levels: LS, LT and LTZ in half-ton, and LS and LT in three-quarter-ton. Highlights of the 1500 LS include a 5.3-liter V-8 engine with available E85 flex-fuel capability and 4-speed automatic transmission; custom cloth 8-passenger seating; CD player with new MP3 capability; three months free XM satellite radio; electronic stability control; anti-lock brakes; and one year of OnStar service. The half-ton LT comes in 1LT, 2LT and 3LT trim. 1LT has custom cloth 7-passenger seating with front-row bucket seats. 2LT has leather seats; in-dash 6-disc CD player with MP3 capability; rear parking assist; power-adjustable pedals; and remote vehicle start. 3LT adds heated 10-way power front seats with driver memory; Bose speaker system; and body-color, power folding and adjustable, auto-dimming, heated outside mirrors. LTZ adds GM's autoride suspension; power-remote liftgate; chrome door handles, mirror caps and grille insert; and 20-inch polished aluminum wheels.

The 2500 or three-quarter-ton Suburban in LS trim includes the 6.0-liter V-8 engine and heavy-duty 6-speed automatic transmission; handling/trailering suspension package; and custom 8-passenger seating, with seating for nine available. The three-quarter-ton Suburban is also available in three LT trims: 1LT, 2LT and 3LT, each with a 6.0-liter V-8 engine and heavy-duty 6-speed automatic transmission. They are all equipped similarly to the half-ton LT trims.

Options on the 2008 Chevrolet Suburban include remote start; rear parking assist; power-release second-row seats; heated first- and second-row seats; DVD rear entertainment system; DVD-based navigation system; rearview back-up camera; and 20-inch wheels.

Powertrain
The Vortec 5.3-liter V-8 engine on the 2008 Chevrolet Suburban 1500 generates 320 hp at 5200 rpm and 335 lb.-ft. of torque at 4400 rpm, and is mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission. The 5.3-liter E85 flex-fuel vehicle (FFV) V-8 engine, standard on half-ton 2WD models and available on 4WD, operates on either regular unleaded gasoline or E85-a blend of 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline-or a combination of both. The optional Vortec 6.0-liter V-8 engine in half-ton models produces 366 hp at 5500 rpm and 380 lb.-ft. of torque at 4300 rpm, and is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. Both engines feature GM's Active Fuel Management technology, which allows virtually seamless movement from eight to four cylinders with no reduction in available power, according to the company. In the three-quarter-ton Suburban, the standard 6.0-liter V-8 engine pumps out 352 hp at 5400 rpm and 383 lb.-ft. of torque at 4300 rpm.

EPA fuel economy for the gas-powered half-ton 5.3-liter V-8 engine with 2WD is estimated at 14 mpg city/20 mpg highway and 14 mpg city/19 mpg highway for 4WD. With the FFV 5.3-liter V-8 engine with 2WD operating on gas, the estimates are 14 mpg city/20 mpg highway, and 11 mpg city/15 mpg highway operating on E85. In 4WD, the numbers are 14 mpg city/19 mpg highway (gas) and 11 mpg city/14 mpg highway (E85). For the 6.0-liter V-8 engine in the half-ton Suburban, the EPA numbers are 12 mpg city/17 mpg highway for both 2WD and 4WD. EPA numbers are not available for the three-quarter-ton Suburban.

Safety
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2008 Chevrolet Suburban 1500 (half-ton) receives a perfect 5-star rating in frontal- and side-impact crash tests. In rollover testing, the vehicle receives a 3-star rating for both 2WD and 4WD configurations. NHTSA ratings are not available for the 2500 (three-quarter-ton) Suburban.

All 2008 Chevrolet Suburban models are equipped with standard dual front air bags and new roof-mounted side curtain air bags for all occupants; safety belt pre-tensioners; Lower Anchors and Tethers For CHildren (LATCH) system for child safety seats; electronic traction control; and anti-lock brakes. Power adjustable pedals and a rearview back-up system are also available. OnStar with one-year Safe & Sound plan is standard on all 2008 Chevrolet Suburban models.

Technology
Three different AM/FM stereo systems (single disc, in-dash 6-disc, dual-play CD/DVD/MP3) with 8 speakers are available in the 2008 Chevrolet Suburban, as well as a Bose 9-speaker system. An auxiliary audio input jack and rear-seat audio controls are also standard, along with three months free XM satellite radio. An entertainment system and navigation radio system are optional.
