The 2006 Suburban offers a new uplevel LTZ model that comes with a Vortec 6000 V-8, a leather-appointed interior, all-wheel drive, 20-inch wheels, and special exterior styling to distinguish it from other models. It also sports a larger extendable side mirror for 2500 models, and all models now feature a standard tire pressure monitoring system. Quadrasteer, the optional four-wheel steering system, has been dropped.
This will be the last model year for the old-generation Suburban, as it will be replaced by an all-new version for 2007. Nonetheless, it offers all the utilitarian benefits that have made the Suburban a hugely popular full-size SUV for decades. Capable of hauling up to nine passengers and their gear while towing up to 12,000 pounds, the Suburban is often viewed as the ultimate hauler. It offers up to 131.6 cubic feet of cargo space with 45.7 cubic feet behind the third row of seats alone.
The 2006 Suburban is available in 1/2-ton (1500 Series) and 3/4-ton (2500 Series) configurations with four trim levels: LS, Z71, LT, and the new LTZ. It comes in either two- or four-wheel drive and offers a choice of three V-8 engines. Half-ton models come standard with the Vortec 5300 5.3L that delivers 295 hp with a tow rating of 8,400 pounds. It's also a flexible-fuel engine, meaning it can run on either unleaded gasoline or a blend of up to 85 percent ethanol. The standard powerplant on 3/4-ton models is the Vortec 6000 6.0L, which generates 335 hp and is capable of towing up to 9,900 pounds. Optional on 3/4-ton models is the Vortec 8100 8.1L that provides 320 hp and has a maximum towing capacity of 12,000 pounds. Three 4-speed automatic transmissions with electronic controls and tow/haul modes are available, depending on engine choice. Four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with Hydroboost, which provides more reserve power assist under certain braking conditions, are standard, as is the latest generation of OnStar.
The Suburban competes in the Large Utility segment of the U.S. light-truck market. This category is characterized by big, powerful vehicles with maximum passenger capacity and solid towing capability in comfortable, easy-to-drive packages. Due to continued increases in fuel costs, however, sales of full-size SUVs dropped substantially during the 2005 calendar year.
The J.D. Power and Associates Sales Report SM reveals that Suburban is third in sales in this seven-model category, having garnered a total of 87,011 unit sales during calendar year 2005. The segment leader is the Chevy Tahoe (152,305 units sold) followed by the Ford Expedition (114,137). Rounding out the segment are the GMC Yukon, GMC Yukon XL, Toyota Sequoia, and Nissan Armada. The all-new 2007 model-year Suburban and Tahoe went on sale in the second quarter of 2006.
