  • Optional Advanced Safety package for all except LS trim level

The 2014 Chevrolet Sonic is a small car offered in 5-door hatchback and 4-door sedan body styles. It slots into the Chevrolet lineup between the Spark and the Cruze, and competes against models such as the Ford Fiesta, Honda Fit, Hyundai Accent, Kia Rio, Mazda 2, Nissan Versa and Versa Note, and Toyota Yaris.

Models and Features
The Sonic is sold in LS, LT and LTZ trim levels. The 5-door hatchback model is also offered in sporty RS trim.

Choose the Sonic LT and the car is equipped with several upgrades including Bluetooth audio streaming, a USB port, satellite radio, premium speaker system, power windows with express operation, power heated exterior mirrors, cruise control, and remote engine starting (with automatic transmission). Deluxe cloth seat fabric, floor mats, chrome exterior moldings and 15-inch aluminum wheels identify the Sonic LT.

The Sonic LTZ includes a standard leather-wrapped steering wheel, perforated leatherette seat upholstery, heated front seats, and a Chevrolet MyLink radio with a 7-inch color touch screen and numerous applications, including BringGo navigation, Siri Eyes Free technology (for iPhone users), Pandora and Stitcher Internet radio, and TuneIn global radio. The Sonic LTZ also has more chrome exterior trim, fog lights, and 17-inch aluminum wheels.

The Sonic RS has a more powerful standard engine, and Chevrolet adds a sport suspension designed to make it more entertaining to drive. The RS also has standard leather seats with suede microfiber inserts, a flat-bottom sport steering wheel, leather-wrapped shift knob, aluminum pedals, revised gauges, unique 17-inch wheels, and a number of exterior styling cues.

Options and Packages
The Sonic LS is not offered with many options. Aside from an automatic transmission, extra-cost paint colors, Chevrolet MyLink radio, and a handful of utility and cosmetic upgrades, what you see is what you get.

The Sonic LT offers greater variety in terms of interior color selection, and is offered with a turbocharged engine upgrade, larger 16-inch aluminum wheels, reversing camera, promotional package (fog lights, MyLink radio, power sunroof), and an Advanced Safety package with forward-collision alert and lane-departure warning systems. Several dealer-installed accessories are also available for this version.

Sonic LTZ and RS trim levels can also be optioned with the Advanced Safety package for 2014, as well as a power sunroof and extra-cost items from the dealer.

Under the Hood
All Sonic trim levels except for the RS are equipped with a standard 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine producing 138 horsepower at 6,300 rpm and 125 lb.-ft. of torque at 3,800 rpm. A 5-speed manual gearbox is standard, with a 6-speed automatic transmission optional.

The Sonic RS is equipped with a turbocharged, 1.4-liter 4-cylinder engine that generates 138 horsepower at 4,800 rpm. This engine also develops 148 lb.-ft. of torque, starting from 2,500 rpm with the standard 6-speed manual gearbox and from 1,850 rpm with the optional 6-speed automatic transmission. Chevrolet says 90 percent of that torque is available all the way to 6,500 rpm. This powertrain is an option for the Sonic LT and LTZ.

Fuel Economy
When equipped with the standard 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine, the Sonic gets between 25 mpg in the city with the automatic transmission and 35 mpg with either the manual or automatic.

Choose a turbocharged Sonic and the estimates rise to a range between 27 mpg in the city with the automatic transmission and 40 mpg on the highway with the manual gearbox. Sonic RS models are not quite as fuel efficient as other versions of the car.

Safety Ratings and Technology
In crash tests performed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2014 Sonic received a 5-star overall rating, the highest possible. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) had not rated the crashworthiness of the 2014 Sonic as this overview was written.

This year, Chevrolet adds several safety-related options for the Sonic. A reversing camera is standard for the LTZ and the RS, and optional for the LT. Additionally, all three of these trim levels can be fitted with a new Advanced Safety package containing forward-collision alert and lane-departure warning systems.

These upgrades join 10 standard air bags and OnStar telematics as a part of the Sonic's safety package. OnStar includes a free 6-month subscription to Automatic Crash Response service, which activates in the event of an air bag deployment and helps to speed emergency personnel to the scene of the accident. Through OnStar, owners can opt for FamilyLink service, which provide remote vehicle tracking and location alert features.

The Sonic's Chevrolet MyLink system also provides a Siri Eyes Free mode to owners with a compatible iPhone paired to the system. This feature allows voice-activated access to phone contacts, music libraries, and text-message composition.
