Exterior Features

Chevrolet offers the Sonic as a 4-door sedan in LS, LT and LTZ trim levels, or as a 5-door hatchback in those same trim designations. There is also an RS performance model. Chevy says the Sonic's round headlights are "motorcycle-inspired."

Interior Features
Motorcycle inspiration continues inside with an unusual set of gauges featuring a round analog tachometer and digital speedometer. All Sonics have air conditioning, a stereo with an auxiliary input jack, Bluetooth hands-free calling, and power door locks.

Optional Features
Upgrading to the LT trim adds Bluetooth audio streaming, satellite radio, premium sound, cruise control, power windows, power mirrors, alloy wheels, and more. The LTZ trim includes leatherette upholstery, Chevy MyLink color touch-screen radio, heated front seats, and 17-inch wheels. The new Sonic RS model includes a stiffer suspension that rides 10mm lower than other Sonic models, as well as 4-wheel-disc brakes, unique styling and trim, and leather seats.

Under the Hood
Standard on all versions of the Sonic except for the RS model is a 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine. It is rated to generate 138 horsepower, and powers the front wheels through either a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission. Chevy says 90% of the peak 125 lb.-ft. of torque is available from 2,400 to 6,500 rpm.

A turbocharged, 1.4-liter 4-cylinder engine is available for LT and LTZ trims, and is standard on the Sonic RS. It also generates 138 horsepower but has greater torque at 148 lb.-ft., from 1,850 to 4,900 rpm. Buyers may select either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission.

Fuel Economy
As this overview was written, the EPA had not finalized fuel-economy estimates for the 2013 Sonic. Chevrolet makes the following estimates:
  • Sonic 1.8L with manual transmission: 26/35* mpg (city/highway)
  • Sonic 1.8L with automatic transmission: 25/35 mpg
  • Sonic 1.4L Turbo with manual transmission: 29/40 mpg
  • Sonic 1.4L Turbo with automatic transmission: 27/37 mpg

*Neither the EPA nor Chevrolet has yet provided fuel-economy estimates for combined driving on the 2013 Sonic models.

Safety
Every 2013 Chevy Sonic is equipped with 10 standard air bags, anti-lock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist, traction and stability control, and 6 months of free OnStar service including Automatic Crash Response.

As this overview was published, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) had not tested the 2013 Chevrolet Sonic. However, the structurally identical 2012 model received a 5- (out of 5) star overall crash-test rating from the NHTSA. Also, the 2012 Chevrolet Sonic was named a "Top Safety Pick" by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
