Overview

What's New
The heavy-duty (HD) line of 2007 Silverados has been totally redone (although the previous-generation model-dubbed the "classic"-also exists for 2007). New interior and exterior changes, helping to differentiate the HD from its light-duty counterparts, are accompanied by upgraded gasoline and diesel powerplants and a new 6-speed automatic transmission.

Overview
Chevrolet has long been a leader in providing consumers with a line of pickup trucks capable of handling heavy-duty tasks, and the new line of 2007 Silverado HD trucks raises the bar even higher. Compared with its light-duty counterparts, the HDs typically offer beefier suspensions, higher-capacity brakes, extra horsepower and torque, and numerous other heavy-duty components and systems that combine to give the HDs unparalleled payload and towing capacities. Other 2007 distinctions include a higher-raked, 57-degree windshield designed to reduce wind noise and improve fuel efficiency; tighter gaps between body panels-the most noteworthy being a 50 percent reduction in the gap between the cab and cargo box; larger door handles to accommodate glove-clad hands; and larger front recovery hooks.

Heavy-duty Silverados come in two models: three-quarter-ton 2500HD and one-ton 3500HD. Both are available in WT, LT1, LT2, and LTZ trim, each featuring specific appearance and interior packages. Customers can choose between three cab configurations (regular, extended, and crew cab), two cargo box lengths (6-foot 6-inch and 8-foot), and five wheelbase lengths. The 3500HD also offers a dual-rear-wheel configuration. Safety features include dual-stage frontal air bags, seat belt pre-tensioners, electronic rear park assist, tire-pressure monitoring, and remote starting.

The 2007 Silverado HD sports a new, Gen-IV 6.0-liter V-8 gasoline engine that delivers what Chevrolet touts as best-in-class horsepower (353) and torque (373 lb.-ft.). It features variable valve timing for improved performance and fuel economy, which is further enhanced by mating the engine to a new 6-speed automatic transmission equipped with manual-shift capability. Chevrolet also offers a cleaner, more powerful version of the Duramax 6.6-liter turbo-diesel that now puts out 365 hp and 660 lb.-ft. of torque. The diesel is paired with a 6-speed Allison 1000 automatic transmission. Both powertrains come with a 5-year/100,000-mile warranty.

The Competition
The Chevrolet Silverado HD competes in the Large Pickup segment, which consists of seven models. Buyers in this segment look for performance, comfort, and reliability, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2006 Avoider StudySM and the Escaped Shopper Study.SM

The top sellers in the segment during calendar year 2006, according to the J.D. Power and Associates Sales Report,SM were the Ford F-Series (764,198 units sold, including Super Duty models), Chevrolet Silverado (636,069, including Heavy Duty and Classic models), and Dodge Ram Pickup (364,177, including Heavy Duty models). The Chevrolet Silverado/HD/Classic's 636,069 sales in 2006 represent a decrease of 9.9 percent compared to the previous year. Other models offered in the Large Pickup segment include the GMC Sierra/Sierra Classic (light- and heavy-duty models), Toyota Tundra, Nissan Titan, and Chevrolet Avalanche.
