Overview
Essentially unchanged from 2007 when Silverado was completely redesigned, the 2008 full-size Chevrolet pickup boasts a 5-star frontal and side-impact crash test rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA): a distinction it shares only with the GMC Sierra, according to the manufacturer. With three cab styles, three box lengths, four engines, and a towing capacity of 10,500 pounds, Chevy's popular pickup offers some minor refinements to pique consumer interest in 2008.

Model Lineup
For 2008, consumers can choose a Chevrolet Silverado 1500 in Regular Cab, Extended Cab or Crew Cab, in rear-wheel drive (RWD) or 4-wheel drive (4WD). Three box lengths are offered: 5-ft. 8-in., 6-ft. 6-in., and 8-ft., along with five trim levels. The basic Work Truck (WT) is a short box, available as Regular, Extended or Crew Cab. V-6 or V-8 engines are available, depending on configuration, with standard 4-speed automatic transmission. WT includes a driver information center; dual glove boxes; tire-pressure monitor; 40/20/40 split-bench vinyl front and full rear bench seat (Ext. & Crew Cab); AM/FM stereo with MP3-compatible CD player and auxiliary MP3 input jack; and two auxiliary power outlets. The LS trim (Crew Cab only) adds remote keyless entry; power windows, door locks and mirrors; 40/20/40 split-bench cloth front and 60/40 split-bench rear seats; 17-inch chrome styled-steel wheels; and black, foldaway, power heated, outside rearview mirrors. Silverado 1LT models (Reg., Ext. & Crew Cab) have V-8 engines (depending on model); 40/20/40 select cloth split-bench front and 60/40 split-bench rear seats (Extended and Crew Cab); and an auto-dimming inside rearview mirror with compass and temperature display.

Silverado 2LT adds premium cloth reclining front bucket seats and 60/40 split-bench rear seats (Extended and Crew Cab); 6-way power adjustable front seats with memory; dual-zone automatic temperature controls; steering wheel-mounted audio controls; foglamps; and 17-inch custom aluminum wheels. Step up to the LTZ and add heavy-duty trailering equipment; automatic locking rear differential; leather front bucket seats and 60/40 split-bench rear seats (Ext. & Crew Cab); 10-way power adjustable front seats with memory; Bose sound system; remote vehicle start; and a heated windshield washer fluid system.

Options include an LS package (LS only) with chrome styled-steel wheels, front bumper and grille surround; trailering mirrors; front recovery hooks; EZ-lift tailgate with top-cap spoiler; rear parking assist (Extended and Crew Cab); cargo management system; automatic locking rear differential; trailer, anti-lock brake-integrated brake controller; skid plate package; snow plow prep package; high-performance suspension (2LT/LTZ); and 1LT or 2LT convenience package.

Powertrain
Power for the 2008 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 comes in one of four different Vortec engines. The base 4.3-liter V-6 engine produces 195 hp at 4600 rpm and 260 lb.-ft. of torque at 2800 rpm. The optional 4.8-liter overhead valve (OHV) 16-valve V-8 delivers 295 hp at 5600 rpm and 305 lb.-ft. of torque at 4800 rpm. EPA fuel economy estimates for the 4.3-liter V-6 are 15 mpg city/20 mpg highway for the 2WD and 14 mpg city/18 mpg highway for 4WD. The 4.8-liter V-8 gets an estimated 14 mpg city/19 mpg highway (2WD), and 14 mpg city/18 mpg highway (4WD).

The third engine choice, a 5.3-liter V-8, comes in four versions: an iron block, aluminum block, and iron or aluminum block with flex-fuel capability (able to run on gasoline, E85, or a combination of both fuels). The 5.3-liter V-8 engine delivers 315 hp at 5200 rpm and 338 lb.-ft. of torque at 4400 rpm. EPA fuel economy estimates for the 2WD 5.3-liter V-8 is 11 mpg city/15 mpg highway (E85), and 15 mpg city/20 mpg highway (gas); while the 4WD gets an estimated 11 mpg city/14 mpg highway (E85) and 14 mpg city/19 mpg highway (gas).

The powerful Vortec Max 6.0-liter V-8 engine pumps out 367 hp at 5500 rpm and 375 lb.-ft. of torque at 4300 rpm. The EPA numbers for the 6.0 V-8 are 13 mpg city/18 mpg highway (2WD) and 13 mpg city/17 mpg highway (4WD).

All engines are mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission with tow/haul mode. A super-duty transmission is optional for LT and LTZ models. GM provides a 5-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty and roadside assistance program. Also included are standard 4-wheel anti-lock brakes and standard (on WT and LS) or optional (LT/LTZ) electronic stability control.

Safety
According to the NHTSA, the 2008 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab, Crew Cab and Extended Cab models (2WD and 4WD) receive perfect 5-star ratings for all occupants in frontal and side-impact crash tests-with and without available head curtain side-impact air bags. In NHTSA rollover testing, all Silverado 1500 models receive a 4-star rating. Dual front air bags are standard, with available (on LT, WT and LTZ) roof-mounted, rollover-capable head curtain side air bags that are integrated into strengthened body and chassis structures, according to Chevrolet. Other safety features include electronic stability control, anti-lock brakes, and safety belt pre-tensioners that activate during a crash.

Technology
The 2008 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 offers an array of stereos, coupeed with three free months of XM satellite radio. An AM/FM stereo with MP3-compatible player, auxiliary MP3 input jack, theft-lock and radio data system is standard on the 2008 Silverado 1500 WT. There's also an optional in-dash, 6-disc CD changer and Bose system; an AM/FM stereo with MP3-compatible CD/DVD player; Bose speaker system with subwoofer in the center console; and a touch screen navigation radio, with or without DVD player.
