touts the Silverado as the "industry's strongest, most dependable and longest-lasting pickup truck." With a heritage that dates back to 1924, when the first Chevy pickup truck appeared, the workhorse has gone through various iterations, the last being the Silverado redesign in 2007
. For 2009, the full-size Silverado gets a new 6-speed automatic transmission with V-8 engines, including a more powerful E85-capable 6.2-liter engine on crew cab models, new 18- and 20-inch chrome-clad wheels, OnStar 8.0, Bluetooth connectivity, and rearview camera system on extended and crew cab. An XFE model is due in the fourth quarter of 2008, promising 1 mpg greater fuel economy in city/highway driving than non-XFE models.Model Lineup
For 2009, the full-size Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and Silverado Hybrid offer just about anything the pickup customer requires. The family includes three cab styles (regular, extended and crew cab). Three cargo box lengths are available: 68 inches (short), 78 inches (standard), and 96 inches (long). Silverado is available in Work Truck (WT) in crew cab only, LS, LT and LTZ, and comes in 2-wheel drive (2WD) and 4-wheel drive (4WD). The "pure pickup interior" of the WT, LS and LT trim includes larger controls and door handles that are easier to use with gloves, according to Chevy. A new, lockable in-seat storage bin, built into the new 40/20/40-split bench, can hold a laptop computer and has a 12-volt power outlet. The instrument panel on WT, LS and LT is 3.5 inches lower and farther forward. Standard equipment on the LT includes a chrome bumper, while in LTZ trim, body-color front bumpers are standard. A stadium-style rear seat with 60/40-split design and folding center armrest that can easily be folded up with one hand is standard on crew cab models and optional on extended cab models.
Silverado 1500 LTZ models feature as standard equipment: a large center console with 20.1 liters of storage; heated, 10-way, power-adjustable leather front seats; Bose speaker system; and a heated windshield washer system. Rain-sensing automatic windshield wipers come standard with crew cab LTZ models, as well as a rear-seat audio system and a large glove box (approximately 5 liters of storage). LTZ interior color combinations include Dark/Light Cashmere, Dark/Light Titanium and Ebony. The Silverado Hybrid is available in crew cab body style only, in both 2WD and 4WD. Standard equipment includes electronic stability control, locking rear axle, trailering package, 4-wheel disc brakes with 4-channel anti-lock brakes (ABS), and traction control.
Options include a power sliding rear window (on extended/crew cab with LT/LTZ trim); integrated trailer brake controller; leather seats; 6-way, power-adjustable driver seat; and optional 18-inch wheels (with Z71 package) and 20-inch wheels (LT and LTZ). The Z71 Off-Road package has unique body side identification as well as specific monotube front and rear shocks.Powertrain
The 2009 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 pickup is powered by a family of engines featuring advanced technologies, including Active Fuel Management (AFM) cylinder deactivation, variable valve timing (VVT), and flexible-fuel (capable of operating on E85, gasoline, or any combination of the two). Available engines on the Silverado 1500 for 2009 include: a 4.3-liter V-6, rated at 195 hp at 4600 rpm and 260 lb.-ft. of torque at 2800 rpm; a 4.8-liter V-8, rated at 295 hp at 5600 rpm and 305 lb.-ft. of torque at 4600 rpm; two iron-block 5.3-liter flex-fuel V-8 engines (LMG, LY5) with AFM that are E85-capable, rated at 315 hp at 5200 rpm and 338 lb.-ft. of torque at 4400 rpm; two aluminum-block 5.3-liter flex-fuel V-8 engines (LC9, LH6) with AFM and the same horsepower/torque rating; a 6.0-liter V-8 with aluminum block, AFM and VVT, rated at 367 hp at 5600 rpm and 375 lb.-ft. of torque at 4300 rpm (available on LT/LTZ extended/crew cab models with maximum trailering package); and a 6.2-liter V-8 with E85 flex-fuel capability, aluminum block and VVT, rated at 403 hp at 5700 rpm and 417 lb.-ft. of torque at 4300 rpm (available in crew cab models).
EPA-estimated fuel economy numbers are as follows: in 2WD, the Silverado 1500 with 5.3-liter V-8 engine with 4-speed automatic and 6-speed automatic gets 14 mpg city/20 mpg highway, while in 4WD, it's 14 mpg city/19 mpg highway (with 4-speed automatic transmission), and 14 mpg city/20 mpg highway (with 6-speed automatic transmission). The FFV versions of this engine get 14 mpg city/19 mpg highway (with 4-speed automatic transmission), and 14 mpg city/20 mpg highway (with 6-speed automatic transmission) on gasoline, and 10 mpg city/14 mpg highway, and 10 mpg city/15 mpg highway, respectively, for the E85 with 4- and 6-speed transmissions. Reportedly, the new XFE model due later this fall will get an EPA-estimated fuel economy of 15 mpg city/21 mpg highway. The 6.0-liter, non-hybrid engine gets 14 mpg city/19 mpg highway in 2WD, and 13 mpg city/18 mpg highway in 4WD. The 6.2-liter FFV engine in 2WD gets 13 mpg city/19 mpg highway (gasoline), and 10 mpg city/14 mpg highway (E85), and in 4WD, the numbers are 12 mpg city/19 mpg highway (gasoline) and 9 mpg city/14 mpg highway (E85).
The 2009 Chevrolet Silverado Hybrid has the patented GM 2-mode hybrid system with advanced Electrically Variable Transmission (EVT); 300-volt nickel-metal hydride Energy Storage System (ESS); 6.0-liter V-8 engine with AFM; and late intake valve closing technology for better economy. The 6.0-liter Hybrid (2WD) gets 21 mpg city/22 mpg highway, while in 4WD, the numbers are 20 mpg city/20 mpg highway.
A Hydra-Matic electronically controlled 4-speed automatic transmission is mated to the 4.3-liter and 4.8-liter engines, while a Hydra-Matic 6L80 6-speed automatic transmission pairs with the 5.3-liter, 6.0-liter and 6.2-liter engines. A maximum trailering package for extended cab models includes: heavy-duty 9.5-inch rear axle; locking differential; heavy-duty cooling system; and other enhanced features to enable a maximum towing capacity of 10,700 pounds. Available on all models is an integrated trailer brake controller, integrated with ABS.Safety
Safety equipment on all 2009 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and Silverado Hybrid models includes electronic stability control with rollover mitigation technology; dual-stage frontal air bags; roof-mounted rollover-capable head curtain side air bags integrated into strengthened chassis and body structures (available on LT and LTZ); and safety belt pre-tensioners that activate during a rear-end crash. Other safety features include factory-installed remote start (a segment exclusive, according to Chevy); Autotrac active transfer case; Ultrasonic Rear Parking Assist; and a tire-pressure monitor. All models feature standard OnStar 8.0, with one-year Safe & Sound plan. A new standard high-capacity brake system with 4-channel ABS provides greater stopping power. The ABS is linked to the electronic stability control system to mitigate rollover events.
