The all-new Silverado sports new interior and exterior designs, is built on a stronger, smoother-riding chassis, offers 360 degrees of passenger-safety innovation, sports a new suspension system, and is powered by General Motors' new, sophisticated and efficient line of fourth-generation small-block V-8 engines. As a result, payload and towing capacities have also increased.
Chevrolet currently has the distinction of being America's best-selling automotive brand, and the Silverado is its top-selling model. In an effort to maintain its popularity, Chevrolet has upgraded the Silverado with a wide range of improvements. The new platform allows for wider front and rear tracks, for improved stability and handling. Other enhancements include a new coil-over-shock front suspension system, beefier brakes, a new rack-and-pinion steering system, and redesigned pickup boxes that are stronger and a bit larger. The redesigned interior, which features an instrument panel that, compared to the outgoing model, is lower and farther forward for improved ergonomics and visibility, comes in two distinct styles: one designed for a work environment and the other for families.
Due to its late-2006 arrival, the redesigned Silverado is offered alongside the traditional model, which is called the Classic series for 2007. The new Silverado comes in three cab styles-Regular, Extended, and Crew Cab-and in three cargo-box lengths: short, standard, and long. It is available in three trim levels: WT, LT, and LTZ-all available in two- and four-wheel drive. The popular Z71 Off Road package returns for 2007 with unique exterior styling. Adding to the variety are five suspension choices and seven Vortec engines, ranging from a modest 195-hp, 4.3-liter V-6 to a 367-hp, all-aluminum 6.0-liter V-8. Two four-speed automatic transmissions are available. Features like variable valve timing, cylinder-deactivating Active Fuel Management, and FlexFuel, which allows the engine to run on E85 ethanol, gasoline or a combination of both, are available.
A wide variety of options is offered, allowing buyers to tailor their truck to their specific preferences. In addition to a choice of 17-, 18-, and 20-inch wheels, buyers can opt for remote starting, a rear-seat entertainment system, and a touch-screen navigation system. Added conveniences include the availability of a power-operated sliding rear window, a power sunroof, and Ultrasonic Rear Parking Assist. A new option is an innovative cargo management system.
The Chevrolet Silverado competes in the Large Pickup segment, which consists of seven models. Buyers in this segment look for performance, comfort, and reliability, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2006 Avoider StudySM and the Escaped Shopper Study.SM
The top sellers in the segment during calendar year 2006, according to the J.D. Power and Associates Sales Report,SM were the Ford F-Series (764,198 units sold, including Super Duty models), Chevrolet Silverado (636,069, including Heavy Duty models), and Dodge Ram Pickup (364,177, including Heavy Duty models). The Chevrolet Silverado's 636,069 sales in 2006 represent a decrease of 9.9 percent compared to the previous year. Other models offered in the Large Pickup segment include the GMC Sierra (light- and heavy-duty models), Toyota Tundra, Nissan Titan, and Chevrolet Avalanche .
