Overview

A heavy-duty version of the standard Chevrolet pickup truck, the Silverado HD is a stablemate of the GMC Sierra HD. Mechanical features are the same, but the Silverado features its own interior and exterior styling. For 2011, the Silverado HD gains a new diesel engine, an improved frame, and other enhancements.

The 2011 Silverado 2500HD is offered in regular cab, extended cab, and crew cab styles. Regular cabs are coupeed with a 96-inch pickup bed, while extended and crew cabs come with the long bed or a 78-inch bed. The 3500HDs come with an 8-foot bed and regular, extended, and crew cabs. The latter two offer a choice of single or dual rear wheels, and those models are available in the top-line LTZ trim. The 3500HD is also available with a 78-inch bed but only with single rear wheels.

Trim levels for the 2011 Chevrolet Silverado HD range from the basic Work Truck to the top-line LTZ, which offers a host of luxury features as standard equipment, and more as options.

Optional is a 397-horsepower, 6.6-liter, turbo-diesel V-8 engine that produces 765 lb.-ft. of torque. Rear-wheel drive is standard; 4-wheel drive is optional.

Properly equipped, the Silverado 2500HD can tow up to 13,000 pounds, according to Chevrolet. Payloads for the 2500HD, depending on cab size and engine type, range from 2500 to 3900 pounds, the manufacturer claims. The Silverado 3500HD is built for continuous heavy duty, with a top payload of 6355 pounds, and, according to Chevrolet, a towing capacity (when equipped with a fifth-wheel connection) of 21,700 pounds-almost 11 tons.

Standard safety features on the 2011 Chevrolet Silverado HD include anti-lock disc brakes, stability control, hill-start assist, and trailer sway control. Front side air bags and side curtain air bags are optional, as is a rearview camera.
