The Chevrolet Malibu has a long history as a premium family sedan. It began, in the mid-1960s, as a trim level option on the Chevelle model. In 1978, it replaced the Chevelle. Now in its seventh generation, the Malibu receives a few minor equipment changes in 2010. A six-speed automatic transmission is now standard on all but the base model, and all trim levels now have driver-side power-adjustable lumbar support as standard. Two-tone interiors are available on all trim levels

The 2010 Chevrolet Malibu is a five-seater that is available in four standard trim levels: LS, 1LT, 2LT, and LTZ. Standard features of the LS include keyless entry, cruise control, air conditioning, automatic headlights, cruise control, and a basic sound system. The 1LT trim adds cosmetic upgrades and the six-speed transmission. The 2LT features upgrades to the upholstery and front seats, and adds remote engine start functionality. The LTZ receives 18-inch wheels, upgraded mirrors and lights, leather upholstery, and an eight-speaker sound system with two sub-woofers

The standard engine on all trim levels is a 169-hp, 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 158 lb.-ft. of torque. With the six-speed transmission, it delivers 22 mpg in the city, 33 mpg highway, and 26 mpg combined. Optional on the two higher trim levels is a 252-hp 3.6-liter V6 engine which Chevy says will take the Malibu from 0 to 60 mph in 6.7 seconds

In NHTSA testing, the 2010 Chevrolet Malibu received five stars in all frontal- and side- impact tests. It received "Good" ratings on all tests by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS)
