Overview
The 2009 Chevrolet Malibu, all-new last year, returns for 2009 with minimal product changes and a few new features. The fuel-saving 2.4-liter/6-speed automatic powertrain combination is expanded. There are also new exterior colors, and the lineup now includes available Bluetooth wireless connectivity with OnStar's new 8.0 system. The Malibu Hybrid gets a fuel-economy boost, delivering the highest fuel economy of all Malibu models-an EPA-estimated 26 mpg city/34 mpg highway. Electronic stability control with brake assist and traction control is now standard on all models.

Model Lineup
Based on the same GM Epsilon platform as the Saturn Aura and Pontiac G6, the midsize 2009 Chevrolet Malibu is available in four models: Malibu LS, LT, LTZ and Hybrid. Standard equipment includes remote keyless entry; Ecotec 2.4-liter, 4-cylinder DOHC engine with VVT; AM/FM stereo with CD player, MP3-capable playback, auxiliary audio input jack and 6 speakers; custom cloth front bucket seats with reclining seatbacks; power driver's seat with vertical height adjuster; heated seats (2LT and LTZ); anti-lock brakes (ABS); dual front air bags; head curtain side air bags; OnStar, and XM satellite radio. The LTZ has leather seats; leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter knob; front bucket seats; and 18-inch alloy wheels.The Malibu Hybrid has a revised instrument cluster to advise the driver on hybrid powertrain operations. GM's 100,000-mile, 5-year transferable limited powertrain warranty that includes courtesy transportation and roadside assistance is also standard. The Malibu Hybrid's advanced nickel metal hydride (NiMH) battery pack and other key hybrid components are covered by an 8-year/100,000-mile warranty.

Options on the 2009 Malibu include a power sunroof; a variety of wheels; engine package (3.6-liter V-6 DOHC engine with VVT, 6-speed automatic transmission); premium audio package (AM/FM stereo with in-dash, 6-disc CD changer and premium 8-speaker sound system); power convenience package (6-way power-seat adjuster, remote vehicle starter system and power adjustable pedals); and the rear power package (rear power center includes 110-volt AC with 3-prong outlet, and manual backglass shade).

Powertrain
The standard engine on Malibu LS and LT models is GM's Ecotec 2.4-liter, 4-cylinder DOHC engine with VVT, paired with a 4-speed automatic transmission that delivers 169 hp at 6400 rpm and 160 lb.-ft. of torque at 4500 rpm. The Malibu Hybrid is also powered by the Ecotec 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine with VVT, coupeed with a special hybrid propulsion electric system with 36-watt NiMH battery. It generates 164 hp at 6000 rpm and 159 lb.-ft. of torque at 4400 rpm. The more powerful all-aluminum 3.6-liter V-6 DOHC engine with VVT and 6-speed automatic transmission is optional on Malibu 2LT and standard on the LTZ model and delivers 252 hp at 6300 rpm and 251 lb.-ft. of torque at 3200 rpm. The 6-speed transmissions also feature TAPshift, which enables the driver to shift manually with steering wheel-mounted shift controls. EPA fuel-economy estimates for the base engine 2.4-liter 4-speed automatic are 22 mpg city/30 mpg highway, while the Malibu Hybrid's 2.4-liter benefits from a 4-mpg increase at 26 mpg city/34 mpg highway and is classified by the EPA as an HEV. The 3.6-liter V-6 engine with 6-speed automatic transmission has a rating of 17 mpg city/26 mpg highway.

Safety
Standard on all 2009 Chevrolet Malibu models is OnStar 8.0, which features advanced automatic crash notification, remote diagnostics, Turn-by-Turn Navigation and monthly status report. This is OnStar's first factory-installed, fully integrated GPS navigation system. Other standard and available safety features include dual-stage front air bags with GM passenger-sensing system; front-seat-mounted thorax protection air bags; head curtain side-impact air bags for front and rear outboard seats;4-wheel disc brakes with ABS; child-safe door locks; vehicle anti-lockout device; theft-deterrent system for vehicle and contents; front safety belt pre-tensioners; LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren) system; tire-pressure-monitoring system; and electronic stability control system with brake assist and traction control.

In crash tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2009 Malibu and Malibu Hybrid with side air bags received a perfect 5-star rating for driver and passenger frontal and side impact crash protection, and a 4-star rollover rating.

Technology
The 2009 Chevrolet Malibu technology features include a factory-installed remote vehicle starter; XM satellite radio; OnStar 8.0; and a premium AM/FM stereo with in-dash, 6-disc MP3-capable CD changer, auxiliary audio input jack, 210-watt, 8 speaker sound system including subwoofer (standard on LTZ, optional on 2LT). Bluetooth wireless capability with OnStar 8.0 is standard on LTZ models, and optional on 2LT models.
