Overview
First introduced in 1958 as a top-of-the-line option on the rear-wheel-drive Chevrolet Bel Air, the Impala was produced until 1985, and again from 1994-1996 in SS trim. It returned in 2000 as a front-wheel-drive model. The Impala SS, long revered by aficionados as a performance car and highly collectible (especially the 1994-1996 models), was resurrected by Chevrolet in 2004.

The 2009 Chevrolet Impala adds new standard safety features, including standard thorax side-impact air bags and front seat safety belt pre-tensioners; optional Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free calling; new 18-inch aluminum wheels for the Impala SS; common rear spoiler for all models; and three new exterior colors: Silver Ice Metallic, Aqua Blue Metallic and Victory Red. The Impala continues to offer two V-6 E85 flex-fuel-capable engines as well as the more powerful V-8 engine in the Impala SS.

Model Lineup
The 2009 Chevrolet Impala is offered in four models: LS, LT, LTZ and SS. Each model has identifying exterior trim cues, while the SS has a unique front-end appearance with a dual-split grille and SS-signature black-diamond crosshatch pattern. Standard on LTZ and SS models and available on LT is a rear spoiler. Standard features on all models include dual-zone climate control; expanded driver information center with 50+ alerts (depending on vehicle configuration); steering wheel-mounted cruise control buttons; and steering wheel audio controls on up-level models. LS, LT and LTZ models have a wood-trimmed interior, while the SS has a standard "technical" pattern trim, with wood trim available as an option. Flip-and-fold rear seats are standard on LTZ and SS models, and available on LT. Up-level models have leather-appointed seating with French seams. The LTZ and SS models have 8-way, heated power driver seats (SS seats are leather), while a 6-way power driver's seat is standard on LT models with cloth seats. Options include factory-installed remote vehicle start; OnStar Turn-by-Turn Navigation; up-level radios; and a premium Bose system.

Powertrain
Two of the three engines featured in the 2009 Chevrolet Impala line are available as E85 flex-fuel-capable. The 3.5-liter V-6 engine is standard on LS and LT models and produces 211 hp at 5800 rpm and 214 lb.-ft. of torque at 4000 rpm. EPA fuel-economy estimates are 19 mpg city/29 mpg highway (gasoline version) and 14 mpg city/22 mpg highway (E85). Standard in LTZ and optional in LT models is the 3.9-liter V-6 flex-fuel-capable engine that produces 224 hp at 5700 rpm and 235 lb.-ft. of torque at 3200 rpm. The EPA fuel-economy estimates for this engine are 17 mpg city/27 mpg highway (gasoline) and 13 mpg city/20 mpg highway (E85). The Impala SS is powered by an all-aluminum, small-block, 5.3-liter V-8 engine with GM's Active Fuel Management that pumps out 303 hp at 5600 rpm and 323 lb.-ft. of torque at 4000 rpm. An electronically controlled 4-speed automatic transmission is standard on all 2009 Chevrolet Impalas.

Impala's front suspension is MacPherson strut coil-over-spring independent with gas-charged struts and a stabilizer bar, while the rear suspension uses a trailing arm, tri-link setup with coil springs and gas-charged struts. All Impalas have a standard rear stabilizer bar. The Impala has two levels of suspension tuning: FE1 on LS and LT, which includes 16- or 17-inch wheels and Goodyear all-season or Eagle radial tires, and FE3 on LTZ and SS, which includes 18-inch performance tires and 5-spoke alloy wheels. Electronic stability control is standard on 2LT, LTZ and SS models. Four-wheel disc brakes with ABS and traction control is standard on all models.

Safety
The 2009 Chevrolet Impala has standard dual-stage driver and front passenger air bags and front and side curtain air bags; front safety belt pre-tensioners; remote keyless entry; tire-pressure monitor; engine immobilizer; and low-tire-pressure monitor. In addition, all-speed traction control and 4-wheel disc brakes with ABS are standard. Electronic stability control is standard on 2LT, LTZ and SS models.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2009 Chevrolet Impala receives a perfect 5-star rating in frontal-impact crash tests, while the car is still to be tested for side-impact protection. In NHTSA's rollover testing, the 2009 Impala received a 4-star rating.

Technology
All 2009 Chevrolet Impalas have standard OnStar, XM satellite radio and auxiliary input jack for iPod and other portable devices. New for 2009, Bluetooth phone connectivity through the OnStar system enables hands-free calling, with calls connected via the car's audio system. OnStar also offers Turn-by-Turn Navigation with its optional Directions & Connections service. This navigation directs you through your intended route using digital readout lines in the radio head. It enables you to download trip directions through the OnStar advisor, and play them back or pause throughout your drive right up to your destination. The system updates itself, so there's no need to purchase map updates.
