Overview
First introduced in 1958 as a top-of-the-line option on the rear-wheel-drive Chevrolet Bel Air, the Impala was produced until 1985, and again from 1994-1996 in SS trim. It returned in 2000 as a front-wheel-drive model. The Impala SS, long revered by aficionados as a performance car and highly collectible (especially the 1994-1996 models), was resurrected by Chevrolet in 2004.

The 2008 Chevrolet Impala is a carryover from 2007. The Impala was last redesigned for the 2006 model year, but the full-size family sedan features some minor new refinements: a luxury LT model; E85 flex-fuel capability on the optional 3.9-liter V-6 engine; electronic stability control; upgraded Bose sound system; heated front bucket seats; and new 18-inch machined-face aluminum wheels. Impala continues to offer E85 flex-fuel capability in its other two engines.

Model Lineup
The 2008 Chevrolet Impala is offered in four models: LS, LT, LTZ and SS. Two of the three engines available are E85 flex-fuel capable. LS highlights include a 3.5-liter V-6 engine; automatic transmission; 16-inch bolt-on wheel covers; tire-pressure-monitoring system; CD/MP3 player and auxiliary audio input jack; and cloth front bucket and rear bench seats. The 1LT model adds 16-inch, 5-spoke styled aluminum wheels; remote vehicle starter system; and dual-zone climate controls. Buyers who opt for the 2LT model receive the 3.9-liter V-6 engine and automatic transmission; electronic stability control system; foglamps; rear spoiler; dual exhaust; 4-wheel disc brakes with anti-lock brake system (ABS) and traction control; 17-inch, machined aluminum wheels; leather-wrapped steering wheel with mounted audio controls; and flip-and-fold rear seat.

LTZ models feature active fuel management, heated front bucket seats, Bose sound system, and bright chrome door handles. The Impala SS model includes a 303-hp, small-block V-8 engine and heavy-duty automatic transmission; SS-specific rear spoiler; performance-tuned suspension; dual, polished-steel exhaust tips; 18-inch performance tires; and 18-inch machined aluminum wheels.

Powertrain
Two of the three engines featured in the 2008 Chevrolet Impala line are available as E85 flex-fuel-capable. The 3.5-liter V-6 engine is standard on LS and LT models and produces 211 hp at 5800 rpm and 214 lb.-ft. of torque at 4000 rpm. EPA fuel economy estimates are 18 mpg city/29 mpg highway (gasoline version) and 14 mpg city/21 mpg highway (E85). The 2LT and LTZ models have the 3.9-liter V-6 engine that produces 233 hp at 5600 rpm and 240 lb.-ft. of torque at 4000 rpm. The EPA fuel economy estimates for this engine are 17 mpg city/25 mpg highway (gasoline) and 12 mpg city/19 mpg highway (E85). The Impala SS is powered by a 5.3-liter V-8 engine that pumps out 303 hp at 5600 rpm and 323 lb.-ft. of torque at 4400 rpm. An automatic transmission is standard on all 2008 Chevrolet Impalas. Electronic stability control, all-speed traction control and 4-wheel ABS are standard on 2LT, LTZ and SS models.

Safety
The 2008 Chevrolet Impala has standard dual-stage driver and front passenger air bags and front and rear head curtain side air bags; remote trunk release; one year of OnStar Safe & Sound plan; keyless entry; electronic brake assist; engine immobilizer; and low-tire-pressure monitor. In addition, electronic stability control, all-speed traction control and 4-wheel ABS are standard on some models. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the Chevrolet Impala receives 5-star ratings for all occupants in frontal and front side-impact crash tests, and a 4-star rating for rear side-impact crash and rollover testing.

Technology
All 2008 Chevrolet Impalas have an AM/FM stereo with radio data system and 6 speakers, CD player with MP3 capability, auxiliary audio input jack for iPod and other MP3 devices, and three months free XM ratellite radio. An in-dash, 6-disc CD/MP3 player is available on all models except LS and 1LT. The Bose sound system, standard in LTZ and available in LT and SS, features a digital amplifier with six channels of customized equalization and digital signal processing, A-pillar mounted tweeters, and woofers positioned in front-door speakers and the front deck.
