What's New for 2014:

  • Redesigned for 2014
  • Moves firmly into large car category
  • Next-generation Chevrolet MyLink technology
  • Improved safety equipment

The Chevrolet Impala is redesigned for the 2014 model year, the first such undertaking since 2006. The full-size sedan grows in size, now proportioned to compete directly with the Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger, Hyundai Azera, Kia Cadenza, and Toyota Avalon. The previous-generation Impala lives on for 2014, now called the Impala Limited.

Models and Features
The 2014 Chevy Impala is sold in LS, LT and LTZ trim levels, each equipped with a standard 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine and a 6-speed automatic transmission. Versions powered by the 3.6-liter V-6 engine are called the 2LT and 2LTZ.

The Impala LS includes 10 air bags, a free 6-month subscription to OnStar services with Automatic Crash Response and Crisis Assist, acoustic laminated windshield and front window glass, and noise-cancellation technology. Air conditioning, power windows, power side mirrors, power door locks, and remote keyless entry are also standard, as well as cruise control, 8-way power driver's seat, and 18-inch steel wheels with plastic wheel covers. Every Impala LS has Bluetooth connectivity and a 4.2-inch color infotainment display, along with a 6-speaker stereo with HD Radio, satellite radio, CD player, auxiliary audio input jack, and a USB port.

Upgrade to the Impala LT and this sedan includes a Chevrolet MyLink radio with an 8-inch color touch-screen display, additional USB port, and an SD card port. The LT trim level also has dual-zone automatic climate control, heated side mirrors, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, and aluminum wheels.

The Impala LTZ is the luxury-themed trim level, equipped with leather seats, heated front seats, 8-way power front passenger's seat, Keyless Access with push-button starting, and remote vehicle starting. The LTZ includes numerous safety features: lane-departure warning, forward-collision alert, side blind-zone alert, and a reversing camera with rear cross-traffic alert are standard equipment. The LTZ is differentiated from other Impalas by its high-intensity discharge headlights, LED running lights, and 19-inch machined-face aluminum wheels. The 2LTZ is further equipped with a power sunroof.

Options and Packages
Choose the Impala LS, and the only factory option is a Convenience package that adds rear park-assist sensors, a cargo net, and adjustable rear headrests that can fold to improve rear visibility.

Select the Impala LT and the car can be painted in extra-cost colors, equipped with suede microfiber upholstery, and fitted with 19-inch aluminum wheels. Numerous option packages are offered for the LT, containing safety, infotainment, and cosmetic upgrades. The LT trim level is also offered with a power sunroof.

Upgrades exclusive to the Impala LTZ include ventilated front seats, heated steering wheel, power tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, memory for the driver's settings, skylight glass roof treatment, and 20-inch aluminum wheels.

Under the Hood
A direct-injection, 196-horsepower, 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine is standard for the 2014 Impala LS, LT and LTZ trim levels. The Impala 2LT and 2LTZ are equipped with a direct-injection, 305-horsepower, 3.6-liter V-6 engine. Both engines are paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive.

An eAssist powertrain is also offered for the Impala. A gas-electric mild-hybrid powertrain, eAssist is comprised of a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine and a 115-volt lithium-ion battery that powers a 15-kW electric assist motor for a combined horsepower rating of 182. The Impala's eAssist is a mild hybrid system, meaning the electric motor cannot power the car on its own.

Fuel Economy
According to the EPA, the 2014 Impala's 4-cylinder engine is expected to return 21 mpg in the city, 31 mpg on the highway, and 25 mpg in combined driving.

Official fuel-economy estimates for the eAssist and V-6 powertrains are not available as this overview is written. Chevrolet estimates that the Impala eAssist will provide 25 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway, while the V-6 engine will deliver 19 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway.

Safety Ratings and Technology
Neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has performed crash tests on the redesigned 2014 Impala at the time this article was written.

The new Impala is, however, offered with a number of significant safety-related features, not the least of which is 10 standard air bags and 6 free months of OnStar service including Automatic Crash Response and Crisis Assist. Additionally, this full-size family sedan can be equipped with a reversing camera with rear cross-traffic alert, rear park-assist sensors, side blind-zone alert system, lane-departure warning system, and a forward-collision alert system.

A next-generation version of Chevrolet MyLink infotainment and smartphone pairing technology is also offered for the new Impala, operated using an 8-inch color touch screen or voice commands.
