Chevrolet's 2008 Express full-size van is little changed from 2007, continuing the division's 40-year product offering that fills a consumer niche for those who desire maximum passenger and cargo volume. Express vans are most often used in commercial applications, although they are also popular for conversion-van outfitting.

Model Lineup
The 2008 Chevrolet Express is available in Passenger Van, Conversion Van, Work Van and Cutaway Van (commercial only) models, in both regular- (139-inch) and extended- (159-inch or 177-inch) wheelbase lengths. Passenger and Work vans come in three series: light-duty (half-ton) 1500, three-quarter-ton 2500, or heavy-duty () 3500. All-wheel drive (AWD) is available in 1500 Passenger and Work models only, while rear-wheel drive (RWD) is standard. Cutaway Vans are available in 3500 () only, with a choice of three wheelbase lengths: 139-inch, 159-inch, or 177-inch.

Passenger models offer 8-, 12- and 15-passenger seating configurations and come in LS and LT trim levels. LS, popular for fleet service, includes intermittent wipers, air conditioning, AM/FM stereo, enhanced driver information center, and a theft-deterrent system. The more family-oriented LT trim includes rear air conditioning, power windows and door locks, rear window defogger, full-floor carpeting, remote keyless entry, custom cloth upholstery, and front bucket seats.

Options include a chromed grille; driver-side 60/40 swing-out doors; passenger-side sliding door; folding, power, heated mirrors; convenience package with power windows and locks or tilt-steering column and cruise control; rear window defogger; deep tinted glass; remote keyless entry (Work); upgraded audio system with in-dash 6-disc CD changer; custom cloth front seats; 15-passenger seating; and three 16-inch wheel offerings.

Dealer-installed accessories include hitch-mounted bicycle or ski carriers, roof-mounted ladder package, roof rails, splash guards, hood protector, and a hitch ball mounting system for towing.

The 2008 Chevy Express Passenger Van (1500 RWD and AWD) is powered by a 5.3-liter, Vortec V-8 engine that produces 301 hp at 5200 rpm and 325 lb.-ft. of torque at 4500 rpm. An E85 flexible-fuel version of this engine is also available, capable of running on ethanol fuel or a mix of ethanol and gasoline. The Work Van has a 4.3-liter V-6 engine standard on 1500 RWD models that delivers 195 hp at 4600 rpm and 260 lb.-ft. of torque at 2800 rpm. In three-quarter-ton and Work and Cutaway Vans, the power comes from a 4.8-liter V-8 engine that generates 279 hp at 5200 rpm and 294 lb.-ft. of torque at 4500 rpm. Two other engines are optional on Work and Cutaway Vans: a 6.0-liter V-8 engine that generates 323 hp at 4600 rpm and 373 lb.-ft. of torque at 4400 rpm, and a 6.6-liter, diesel V-8 engine that pumps out 250 hp at 3200 rpm and 460 lb.-ft. of torque at 1600 rpm. All 2008 Chevrolet Express models have a standard 4-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission with overdrive, including tow/haul mode; electronic stability control; and 4-wheel ABS.

EPA fuel economy estimates for the 4.3-liter V-6 engine are 15 mpg city/20 mpg highway (1500 RWD), while the 4.8-liter V-8 engine is not rated by the EPA. The 5.3-liter V-8 engine gets an EPA-estimated 12 mpg city/16 mpg highway in RWD and AWD models. The E85 version in either RWD or AWD gets an estimated 9 mpg city/12 mpg highway (E85) and 12 mpg city/16 mpg highway (gas). The 6.0-liter V-8 and diesel 6.6-liter V-8 engines are not rated by the EPA.

Standard safety features on the 2008 Chevrolet Express include dual front air bags; head curtain side-impact air bags (Passenger van only); 3-point safety belts for all seating positions and safety belt pre-tensioners for driver and right-front passenger; steel safety cage; ABS; theft-deterrent system; Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren (LATCH) system for child safety seats (Passenger van only); and a driver information center. Enhanced technical glass provides select rear side window positions (where side curtain air bags are not feasible) with specialty glass designed to mitigate passenger ejection.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2008 Chevrolet Express 1500 Passenger Van receives a 5-star rating for frontal crash-test protection, but is not rated in side-impact tests. In NHTSA rollover tests, the Express 1500 Passenger Van receives a 3-star rating. Express models in 2500 and 3500 configurations are not rated by the NHTSA.

The 2008 Chevrolet Express comes equipped with a standard AM/FM stereo with digital clock and 2 front-door speakers. Other audio systems are optional, including an AM/FM stereo with CD player; one with CD/MP3 player, auto tone control and 2 rear door and 2 sound bar speakers; or an AM/FM setup with MP3-compatible 6-disc in-dash CD changer.
