The Chevrolet Express is a traditional full-size van that was first introduced in 1996. Along with the GMC Savana with which it shares vehicle platforms, the Express is GM's largest van-capable of carrying up to 15 passengers, when properly equipped. The Express van is now in its second generation, last completely redesigned for the 2003 model year. Like its competitor from Ford, the Chevrolet Express is available in different chassis weights and with different wheelbases. This has made it popular among commercial buyers, who frequently modify the Express for shuttle and ambulance duties. Chevrolet has upgraded the Express for 2011 with several enhancements, including a new, larger 6.6-liter turbo-diesel engine, a new 4.8-liter V-8 engine for the 2500 Series, heavy-duty rear differential, upgraded OnStar telecommunications, and available WiFi Internet access.
The 2011 Chevrolet Express is sold in three models: light-duty 1500 Series, and heavy-duty 2500 and 3500 Series. The Express is sold in LS and LT trims, and in two wheelbase lengths: regular and long. Chevrolet also offers a heavy-duty wheelbase for commercial use. In standard configuration, the 2011 Chevrolet Express is fitted with air conditioning, swing-out side doors, vinyl upholstery, rubber floor covering, basic AM/FM audio package, and seating for 12. The 2500 and 3500 Series Express vans will seat up to 15 passengers. The upgraded LT trim adds full power accessories, remote keyless entry, rear air conditioning, full-length carpeting, cloth upholstery, cruise control, and more. Options include alloy wheels, trailer package, sliding side doors, remote vehicle starting, Bluetooth phone connectivity, and more.
The 2011 Chevrolet Express is offered with five different engines. Standard rear-wheel-drive models are fitted with a 4.3-liter V-6 engine rated at 195 horsepower and mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission. Larger engines include the aforementioned 4.8-liter V-8 rated at 280 horsepower, a 5.3-liter V-8 rated at 310 horsepower, and a 6.0-liter V-8 rated at 323 horsepower. The larger engines are mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. A turbocharged diesel powerplant, displacing 6.6 liters and rated at 260 horsepower, is optional. All-wheel drive is optional on some configurations. The EPA rates the fuel economy of the 2011 Chevrolet Express between 11 mpg city and 20 mpg highway, depending on chassis, engine and transmission.
The 2011 Chevrolet Express LS 1500 starts at a base price of around $29,000, and the model range tops out with the Express LS 3500, which starts at around $45,000.
