What's New for 2014:

  • LTZ adds standard chrome wheel trim
  • Two new paint colors

The 2014 Chevrolet Equinox is a 5-passenger crossover SUV sized and priced to compete against larger compact crossover models such as the Honda CR-V, Hyundai Santa Fe Sport, Subaru Forester, and Toyota RAV4.

Models and Features
Equinox buyers choose between a 4-cylinder or a V-6 engine, front-wheel or all-wheel drive (FWD or AWD), and LS, LT, or LTZ trim. Highlights from the standard equipment list include air conditioning, power blind-spot mirrors, power windows with express-down operation for all four doors, power door locks with remote keyless entry, tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, and cruise control. A 6-month subscription to OnStar services is also standard, along with a 6-speaker stereo that includes satellite radio, a CD player, auxiliary audio input jack, and a USB port. The Equinox LS rides on standard 17-inch aluminum wheels.

Move up to the Equinox LT and the crossover is equipped with dark-tinted rear privacy glass, roof rails, heated exterior mirrors, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and upgraded cloth for the seats. A Chevrolet MyLink radio is also standard, including a 7-inch color touch screen, Bluetooth connectivity with streaming audio capability, outside temperature indicator, and a reversing camera. An enhanced version of the Equinox LT is called the 2LT, and it comes with automatic climate control, power driver's seat, heated front seats, remote engine starting, premium speaker system, and fog lights.

At the top of the lineup, the Equinox LTZ includes leather seats, a power front passenger's seat, power tailgate, memory for the driver's preferences, universal remote control, rear park-assist sensors, forward-collision warning system, lane-departure warning system, improved headlights, upgraded trim inside and out, and chrome-clad 18-inch aluminum wheels.

Options and Packages
Choose the Equinox LS and dealers are happy to install a number of extra-cost upgrades before you take delivery. If you're interested in factory options outside of an upgrade to AWD, buying the Equinox LT or LTZ is a prerequisite.

The Equinox LT can be optioned with most of the standard equipment from the more expensive LTZ trim level, as well as premium paint, a power sunroof, and roof rack crossbars. Exclusive upgrades for the Equinox LTZ include the more powerful V-6 engine, 19-inch aluminum wheels, and a rear-seat entertainment system.

Under the Hood
The 2014 Equinox is equipped with a standard 182-horsepower, 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine. A 301-horsepower, 3.6-liter V-6 engine is optional, as is all-wheel drive. A 6-speed automatic is the only transmission choice.

Fuel Economy
The 2014 Chevy Equinox with a 4-cylinder engine gets anywhere from 20 mpg in the city with AWD to 32 mpg on the highway with FWD.

If you want to be able to tow 3,500 lbs. instead of 1,500 lbs., the optional V-6 engine is necessary. Expect fuel economy of 16 mpg in the city with AWD and 24 mpg on the highway with FWD.

Safety Ratings and Technology
In crash tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2014 Equinox receives an overall safety rating of 4 stars (out of 5 stars). As this overview is written, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has not rated the crashworthiness of the 2014 Equinox.

Every 2014 Equinox is equipped with OnStar telematics and a free 6-month subscription to service. That includes Automatic Crash Response, which activates whenever the SUV's air bags deploy and helps rescuers locate the vehicle even if nobody inside the Equinox is able to respond. OnStar also provides an opt-in FamilyLink location-sharing service, helping parents to keep tabs on teen drivers.

Additionally, all versions except the LS include a reversing camera, while a Safety package containing rear park-assist sensors, forward-collision warning system, and a lane-departure warning system is standard for the Equinox LTZ and optional for the Equinox 2LT.
