Overview
Chevrolet's 2008 Colorado pickup is basically a carryover model from 2007, when it received a boost in horsepower with new engines. Chevy's Colorado and the GMC Canyon are fairly identical, with some trim and other differences. The compact Colorado, launched in the 2004 model year as a replacement for the S-10 Pickup, provides legitimate off-road capabilities and an alternative to more expensive full-size trucks, according to Chevrolet. Three suspension packages and various other options are available.

Model Lineup
The 2008 Chevrolet Colorado is available as a short-wheelbase Regular Cab (with seating for 3), and long-wheelbase Extended Cab (seats up to 5) and 4-door Crew Cab (seating up to 6). Standard features include air conditioning, intermittent wipers, rack-and-pinion steering, folding outside mirrors, cruise control, and a tilt steering wheel. Regular Cab and Extended Cab models have LS, 1LT, Work, Z71 and Chassis Cab trim, while Crew Cabs come in 1LT or Z71 trim. Work Truck and LS models offer cruise control, air conditioning and automatic headlights. The LS gets cloth seats versus Work's vinyl. All 2008 Chevy Colorado models are available in 2WD or 4-wheel drive (4WD) with dual-range transfer case. Regular and Extended Cab models have a 6-foot cargo bed, but the Crew has a shorter 5-foot box.

LS Trim (Regular Cab/Extended Cab) includes Z85 suspension, 15-inch aluminum wheels, fog lamps, Insta-Trac 4X4, body-color wheel flares (on 4WD models), and cloth seats. 1LT adds tinted glass, OnStar one-year Safe & Sound plan, 4-speed automatic transmission, and an AM/FM stereo with CD/MP3 player. Z71 (4x4 only) adds the 3.7-liter engine; front recovery hooks; automatic-locking rear differential; Z71 suspension; sliding rear window; power windows, locks and mirrors; and remote keyless entry. Work has a 2-tier tailgate; 6-foot pickup box; and a 4-speed automatic or 5-speed manual transmission. The Chassis Cab model has the 3.7-liter engine; 4-speed automatic transmission; 49-inch cab-to-axle length; and gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 5300 pounds.

Crew Cab in 1LT has the Z85 suspension and 4-speed automatic transmission, OnStar one-year Safe & Sound plan, fog lamps, deluxe cloth seats, AM/FM stereo with CD/MP3 player, tinted glass, and 15-inch aluminum wheels. Z71 in the Crew Cab includes the 3.7-liter engine; Z71 suspension; tinted glass, OnStar; automatic-locking rear differential; front recovery hooks; and an AM/FM stereo with CD/MP3 player.

Options include a sliding rear window; traction control (2WD only); recovery hooks; automatic transmission; 15-inch chrome or 18-inch cast chrome wheels; sunroof (Crew/Extended Cab only), and Sun & Sound package (cloth bucket seats, power sunroof, XM satellite radio, premium stereo).

Powertrain
Two engines power the Chevrolet Colorado in 2008. The 2.9-liter 4-cylinder engine generates 185 hp at 5600 rpm and 190 lb.-ft. of torque at 2800 rpm. Traction control is available on 2WD models only. Three suspension packages are available: standard, Z85 and Z71. EPA fuel economy estimates for Regular Cab 2WD are 18 mpg city/24 mpg highway for both automatic and manual transmissions with the 2.9-liter engine, and 18 mpg city/22 mpg highway for the 3.7-liter engine. In 4WD Regular Cab, the numbers are 17 mpg city/22 mpg highway (2.9-liter automatic transmission) and 16 mpg city/22 mpg highway (2.9-liter manual transmission), and 15 mpg city/21 mpg highway for the 3.7-liter automatic transmission.
