OverviewLong known for its mission to provide consumers with great-looking, fuel-efficient cars that are also fun to drive,
Chevrolet seeks to amp up the game with some styling revisions and enhancements to its entry-level subcompact Aveo sedan and Aveo5 hatchback. The Aveo5 is restyled inside and out, while the 1.6-liter Ecotec engine-standard on all models-is more powerful and delivers more usable horsepower. Chevy says the 2009 Aveo offers the fuel efficiency of many hybrid models, and it's rated a ULEV II with 27 mpg city/34 mpg highway (manual transmission) fuel economy.
Model LineupThe 2009 Chevrolet Aveo is available in Sedan and Aveo5, a 5-door hatchback that's been restyled inside and out. With its new global front-end design,
Malibu-inspired grilles and other details, the Aveo for 2009 is available in LS, 1LT and 2LT models. LS standard equipment includes power steering; variable intermittent windshield wipers; AM/FM stereo with auxiliary input jack; driver's seat with fold-down armrest, manual height and lumbar adjusters; fully reclining front seats; 60/40 split-folding rear seats; tilt steering wheel; rear window defogger and interior fuel door and trunk release. LS options include an automatic transmission; engine oil pan heater and provisions for dealer-installed air conditioning.
The Aveo 1LT adds air conditioning, AM/FM stereo with CD/MP3 player and 6-speaker sound system, and floor mats. Options include an anti-lock braking system (ABS); XM satellite radio; Power and Convenience package (with power windows/locks, remote keyless entry, alarm system and cruise control); and a trunk-mounted rear spoiler. The 2LT adds heated power outside rearview mirrors; power windows/locks, remote keyless entry, and alarm system; cruise control; deluxe cloth seats; steering wheel-mounted audio controls and XM satellite radio. Also standard on 2LT: fog lamps, 15-inch wheels, and (on Aveo sedan) chrome exterior door handles. Options include an automatic transmission, leatherette seating (with leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob), ABS, rear spoiler, and premium power sunroof.
The revamped Aveo5, besides its new exterior styling, also has a roof-mounted spoiler. The hatchback features all of the sedan's standard equipment and options but includes a standard rear wiper/washer and standard 60/40-flip-and-fold seats. Three new exterior colors are added for 2009: Black Granite Metallic, Blue Moon and Tahiti Green.
PowertrainFor 2009, the Chevrolet Aveo and Aveo5 get more power from the 1.6-liter, Gen 3 Ecotec 16-valve dual overhead-cam 4-cylinder engine, rated at 106 hp at 6400 rpm and 106 lb.-ft. of torque at 3800 rpm. Electronic throttle control and an electrically controlled thermostat combine to help maximize engine efficiency and performance. A 5-speed manual transmission is standard, with an optional 4-speed automatic transmission available. Aveo's 1.6-liter engine meets the Ultra Low Emission Vehicle II (ULEV II) emissions standard with EPA-estimated fuel economy of 27 mpg city/34 mpg highway (manual) and 25 mpg city/34 mpg highway (automatic). Power-assisted front disc and rear drum brakes are standard on Aveo, with 4-channel ABS optional.
SafetyThe 2009 Chevrolet Aveo and Aveo5 carry a comprehensive list of standard and available safety features. These include standard advanced dual-stage front air bags and passenger-sensing system and standard seat-mounted side-impact air bags for additional head and thorax protection. Other safety features include a standard tire-pressure monitor; daytime running lamps; front safety belt pre-tensioners; emergency inside-trunk hatch release; fuel door lock with remote release feature; OnStar; optional 4-channel ABS; and an optional engine immobilizer theft-deterrent system.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (
NHTSA), the 2009 Chevrolet Aveo 5-door hatchback received a perfect 5-star rating in frontal crash tests, and a 4-star rating in side-impact tests. The Aveo sedan received a 5-star driver and 4-star passenger frontal test rating, and 4 stars in driver and 3 stars in rear-passenger side-impact tests. Both hatchback and sedan received a 4-star rating in the agency's rollover testing.
