Chevrolet Aveo enters the 2006 model year with enhanced levels of safety and convenience, including standard front-seat-mounted, side-impact air bags, as well as new, advanced two-stage frontal air bags with a passenger cut-off switch. The rear safety belts have been lengthened, and tilting front seat headrests have been added. The interior sees new upholstery fabrics and a contemporary Charcoal/Titanium interior color scheme. All Aveos receive electronic throttle this year, and LT models now have cruise control and remote keyless entry as standard equipment. Four new exterior colors are now available: Medium Gray, Icelandic Blue, Sport Red, and Cosmic Silver.
Available as a four-door sedan or five-door hatchback, the Chevrolet Aveo comes in three trim levels: Special Value, LS, and LT. All models are powered by a throttle-by-wire, 1.6L DOHC four-cylinder engine that develops 103 hp and 107 lb.-ft. of torque. A 5-speed manual transmission is standard, with a 4-speed automatic available. The automatic features a "hold control" setting, which turns the four-speed automatic into a three-speed manual, with the driver changing gears by moving through the gated shifter.
Standard features for all Aveos include a tilt steering column, AM/FM stereo, six-way adjustable driver seat, rear-window defroster, remote fuel door, and a 60/40 split-bench rear seat. Additions to the LS are air conditioning with cabin-air filtration and floor mats. Cruise control and a remote keyless entry package is standard on LT models, as well as an AM/FM stereo with CD player and MP3 playback capability, power door locks/windows, remote keyless entry, body-colored outside heated side-view mirrors, premium seat fabric, and 15-inch alloy wheels. Options for the LS include an automatic transmission, a CD player with MP3 playback capability, a new cruise control system, and a remote keyless entry package. The LT may also be upgraded with a premium six-speaker audio system, power sunroof, and a high-security engine immobilizer.
The Compact Basic segment has traditionally been the place where many first-time buyers seek their new wheels. Recently, this segment has seen a resurgence fueled by ease of maneuverability in urban areas and miserly fuel consumption. This year, the segment sees a host of new competition, including the Honda Fit, Nissan Versa and Toyota Yaris.
According to the J.D. Power and Associates Sales Report,SM the segment is led by the Chevrolet Aveo (68,085 sales in 2005), followed by the Hyundai Accent (41,012) and Kia Rio (30,290). Other competitors include the Scion xA, and the Suzuki Aerio and Reno.
