The 2007 Chevrolet Aveo sedan is newly-redesigned. All-new styling and interior fixtures grace the existing chassis and powertrain. It will still be built in Korea, alongside its hatchback sibling. The Aveo hatchback will carry over for the time being.
The Aveo, Chevy's entry-level model, aims to take Chevrolet into new markets around the world. The style of the front-wheel-drive 2007 Aveo sedan is meant to create the illusion of a larger car through the use of body-side contours that rise from front to rear, body-colored door sills, and pronounced shoulder lines over the wheel openings. Its "tall car" layout allows theater-style seating for rear-seat passengers.
The engine is a 103-hp, 1.6L four cylinder, which is mated to either a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic transmission. Brakes are front disc and rear drum with optional ABS. Fourteen-inch wheels and tires are standard; 15-inch wheels are an option. A number of features come standard, including power-assisted, variable-rack-and-pinion steering, tilting front headrests, 6-way adjustable front seats and driver's armrest, 60/40 split folding rear seat and full reclining front passenger seat, remote keyless entry, and radios with standard auxiliary jacks. Options include a sunroof and power-folding side mirrors.
On the safety front, dual-stage front airbags and seat-mounted side airbags are standard on the '07 sedan model. The 2006 Aveo received five stars from the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA, www.safercar.gov) for its crash results; the new 2007 model is expected to equal that result.
The Chevrolet Aveo competes in the Compact Basic segment, which consists of nine models. Buyers in this segment look for fuel economy, reliability, and low maintenance costs, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2006 Avoider StudySM and the Escaped Shopper Study.SM
The top sellers in the segment during calendar year 2006, according to the J.D. Power and Associates Sales Report,SM were the Toyota Yaris (70,308 units sold), Chevrolet Aveo (58,244), and Hyundai Accent (34,735). The Chevrolet Aveo's 58,244 sales in 2006 represent a decrease of 14.5 percent compared to the previous year. Other models offered in the Compact Basic segment include the Scion xA, Honda Fit, Kia Rio, Nissan Versa, and Suzuki Aerio.
