Overview
Chevrolet's 2009 Avalanche is a carryover model from 2008, and was last redesigned in 2007. Chevy bills the Avalanche as "the industry's most flexible utility vehicle" due to its unique Midgate, combining 6-passenger comfort and attributes of an SUV with a truck's cargo capabilities. Available in rear-wheel drive or 4-wheel drive (RWD or 4WD), the Avalanche has several V-8 engines, including two with E85 flex-fuel capability. Avalanche can tow a maximum of 8100 pounds. New 2009 colors for the LTZ model include White Diamond Tricoat and Inferno Orange. Titanium and Cashmere interiors are available on Z71 models.

Powertrain
The standard engine in the 2009 Chevrolet Avalanche 2WD is an iron-block Vortec 5.3-liter V-8 with GM's Active Fuel Management engine-cylinder-deactivation technology, which produces 320 hp at 5200 rpm and 340 lb.-ft. of torque at 4200 rpm. At the beginning of the 2009 model year, the 4WD Avalanche comes standard with a 5.3-liter aluminum-block V-8 engine that delivers 310 hp at 5200 rpm and 335 lb.-ft. of torque at 4400 rpm. Sometime shortly after start of production, the standard engine in 4WD Avalanche models switches to a 5.3-liter iron-block V-8 engine with Active Fuel Management and flex-fuel capability that delivers 320 hp and 340 lb.-ft. of torque. Two versions of the Vortec 5.3-liter V-8 engine are compatible with E85. An all-aluinum 6.0-liter V-8 engine with variable valve timing (VVT) and Active Fuel Management is available on 2WD and 4WD models. It generates 366 hp at 5800 rpm and 376 lb.-ft. of torque at 4400 rpm.

All Avalanche engines for 2009 are mated with a new and fuel-saving 6-speed automatic transmission. EPA fuel-economy estimates for the standard 5.3-liter engine are 14 mpg city/20 mpg highway (gasoline) and 11 mpg city/15 mpg highway (E85). The 6.0-liter V-8 engine gets an EPA-estimated 14 mpg city/19 mpg highway.

New for 2009, an optional integrated brake controller, integrated with the anti-lock braking system (ABS), provides immediate and measured brake-force signaling to electric-controlled trailer brake systems without a requirement for external or aftermarket brake control systems. The Z71 Off-Road package includes Z71 Off-Road suspension with high-pressure, gas-charged monotube shocks, 18-inch on/off road tires, automatic-locking differential, front recovery hooks, double skid plate, and high-capacity air cleaner.

Safety
Standard safety features on the 2009 Chevrolet Avalanche include a "360-degree safety system of occupant protection and crash-avoidance technologies," according to Chevrolet. This includes standard head curtain side air bags with rollover protection for both rows; front-seat safety belt pre-tensioners linked to the Avalanche's sensing system and providing "segment-exclusive" (again, according to Chevrolet) deployment in rear-end crashes. Other standard features include dual-stage driver front air bag and dual-stage outboard-front passenger air bag with passenger-sensing system; electronic stability control with rollover mitigation technology; traction control; tire-pressure monitor; and 4-wheel ABS. Available safety features include a rain-sensing wiper system, ultrasonic rear parking assist, and a rearview camera. LS models have standard OnStar with one-year Safe & Sound plan. LT and LTZ models have an OnStar one-year Directions & Connections plan with Turn-by-Turn Navigation. OnStar includes the GM advanced crash response system.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2009 Chevrolet Avalanche receives a 5-star rating in frontal- and side-impact crash testing. In NHTSA rollover tests, Avalanche receives a 3-star rating for 2WD and 4WD models. These are the same ratings Avalanche received in 2008.
