, the Cadillac XLR features a revised model lineup as well as exterior and interior styling enhancements for 2009. At a price in the $80,000 range, the 2-person roadster accommodates the discerning consumer with a host of standard technology, luxury and convenience features-and a choice of only two models: XLR and XLR-V
reports that it has simplified the XLR lineup for 2009 to focus more on the car's craftsmanship, design and technology.
With strong landmark Cadillac design and advanced technology, the 2009 XLR and XLR-V
clearly show off the Stealth fighter aircraft influence. The roadster's retractable hardtop is a key component of the design, allowing transformation from coupe to open roadster in less than 30 seconds-just by pushing and holding a single button. Constructed of aluminum and magnesium with composite exterior panels, the hardtop features glass rear-quarter windows and a heated glass backlight. Three new regular-production exterior colors are added: Black Cherry, Radiant Silver and Gray Flannel. Alcantara, a suede-like microfiber, used in the headliner, is available in Ebony or Cashmere. Hand-cut and -sewn leather adorns the upper instrument panel. Power window switches, instrument panel cluster trim rings and graphics, wood grain and metal trims are all new.Model Lineup
The 2009 Cadillac XLR roadster is available in two models: XLR Platinum and the high-performance XLR-V
. Standard equipment includes high-tech and luxury comfort and convenience equipment such as heated and cooled seats; adaptive cruise control; adaptive forward lighting; Magnetic Ride Control; head-up display; electronic stability control; keyless access with push-button start; and DVD navigation and entertainment.
The performance-oriented XLR-V
features a 443-hp, supercharged, Northstar V-8 engine and 6-speed automatic transmission with Driver Shift Control; extensive leather-wrapped surfaces, hand cut, wrapped and sewn individually by craftsmen; and standard 19-inch painted aluminum wheels. Options include a heated steering wheel and 19-inch chrome wheels. According to Cadillac, the XLR is designed to be one of the finest luxury roadsters-and is equipped accordingly. Powertrain
The 2009 Cadillac XLR Platinum features the 4.6-liter, Northstar V-8 engine with variable valve timing (VVT) that produces 320 hp at 6400 rpm and 310 lb.-ft. of torque at 4400 rpm. Special tuning gives driver feedback from the environment. The high-performance XLR-V
is powered by the 4.4-liter, supercharged, Northstar V-8 engine, hand-built by a single craftsman at the GM Performance Build Center. The engine delivers 443 hp at 6400 rpm and 414 lb.-ft. of torque at 3900 rpm, and is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission with Driver Shift Control that Cadillac says allows the XLR-V
to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in less than 5 seconds. Magnetic Ride Control, electronically controlled, magnetic-fluid based real-time damping, is standard on both models. According to Cadillac, the XLR was one of the world's first models to be equipped with Magnetic Ride Control technology.
EPA fuel-economy estimates for the two V-8 engines are as follows: the 320-hp, 4.6-liter V-8 engine achieves 15 mpg city/24 mpg highway, while the 443-hp, 4.4-liter, supercharged V-8 engine in XLR-V
gets 14 mpg city/23 mpg highway.Safety
Safety features for the 2009 Cadillac XLR roadster include advanced head and curtain air bags for driver and front passenger; electronic stability control; adaptive forward lighting; traction control and standard 4-wheel anti-lock brakes (ABS). The XLR Platinum model runs on P235/50R18 Goodyear EMT Run Flat tires, while V
-Series models feature P235/45R19 Pirelli Run Flat tires. The XLR Platinum model has power-assisted disc with 4-channel ABS front and rear, while the XLR-V
has heavy-duty brakes with cross-drilled rotors and high-performance brake linings, dual-piston front and single-piston rear calipers, and 4-channel ABS front and rear.
The 2009 Cadillac XLR has not been tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA
) for frontal, side-impact or rollover crash protection.Technology
The 2009 Cadillac XLR and XLR-V
technology list includes improved Magnetic Ride Control. The XLR features keyless access with push-button start, where the driver can simply keep the fob in pocket or purse to operate the roadster's ignition, doors and trunk. The XLR is also one of the first models to use adaptive forward lighting technology, enabling the headlamps to adjust lighting pattern synchronous with vehicle steering. Adaptive cruise control uses a radar sensor mounted in the front of the car to detect objects in its path. Other technological features in the 2009 XLR include OnStar 8.0 next-generation technology with Turn-by-Turn Navigation, eNav powered by MapQuest; Bluetooth wireless connectivity; and DVD navigation and entertainment. A new iPod interface, available through Cadillac Accessories, allows iPod to be played through the XLR's audio system.
