The ultra-luxury Platinum Edition and STS-V high-performance sedans return, each with some new luxury features. The STS also has minor styling changes including a new body-color rear fascia, new 18-inch available wheels, and available high-intensity-discharge (HID) headlamps and Intellibeam automatic high-beam system. Lane-departure warning and side blind-zone alert systems are available options, as is a performance handling package.

Model Lineup
The 2009 Cadillac STS is available with V-6 or V-8 engine, in RWD and AWD models, the ultra-luxury STS Platinum Edition and the STS-V. Standard equipment on the V-6 engine model includes 17-inch wheels; leather seats; dual-zone climate control and interior air filtration; leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls; advanced electronic stability control; all-speed traction control; tire-pressure monitor; rear parking assist; and outside manual-folding, power-adjusting, heated mirrors (including driver-side auto-dimming feature). Options on the V-6 engine model include a reconfigurable head-up display; heated steering wheel and genuine Sapele wood trim. The Platinum Edition package is also available as an option: this includes a chrome-finish grille; chrome-insert exterior door handles; exclusive Platinum badging; 18-inch chrome-finish wheels; Alcantera headliner; leather-wrapped and heated steering wheel; leather-wrapped instrument panel, door trim and center console; interior chrome accents; premium floor mats; Tuscany full-leather seats; and Cocoa over Cashmere or Ebony interior color scheme.

The STS-V, with its supercharged, 469-hp V-8 engine and numerous chassis enhancements, features extensive leather-wrapped interior surfaces; kinetic aluminum steering wheel and instrument panel accents; and deep-tinted Olive Ash Burl wood on the center stack and door trim.

The 2009 Cadillac STS standard powerplant is GM's 3.6-liter, direct-injection V-6 engine with variable valve timing (VVT). Power output is 302 hp at 6300 rpm and 272 lb.-ft. of torque at 5200 rpm, and is transferred through a 6-speed automatic transmission with driver shift control. Drivers can choose between standard RWD and optional AWD. The V-8 model features a 4.6-liter, Northstar, V-8 VVT engine producing 320 hp at 6400 rpm and 315 lb.-ft. of torque at 4400 rpm. This engine also has a 6-speed automatic transmission with driver shift control. A performance handling package, available for V-8-equipped RWD and AWD models as well as V-6 RWD models, includes 18-inch aluminum alloy chrome-plated wheels, Bridgestone Potenza summer-only tires, and 4-piston Brembo brakes with vented front and rear rotors.

The STS-V gets its power from the supercharged, 4.4-liter, Northstar V-8 engine that is hand-assembled at GM's Performance Build Center. The engine pounds out 469 hp at 6400 rpm and 439 lb.-ft. of torque at 3900 rpm. It is paired with the Hydra-Matic 6-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission with driver shift control. Together, the combination allows the STS-V to accelerate from 0-60 mph in less than 5 seconds, according to GM. Massive air-cooled Brembo brakes, larger wheels and tires, and bigger front and rear stabilizer bars enhance the car's performance. EPA fuel-economy estimates for the 2009 Cadillac STS 3.6-liter V-6 engine in either RWD or AWD are 17 mpg city/26 mpg highway. For the 4.6-liter V-8 engine, the numbers are 15 mpg city/24 mpg highway (RWD) and 15 mpg city/22 mpg highway (AWD). EPA estimates for the supercharged 4.4-liter V-8 are 13 mpg city/19 mpg highway.

The 2009 Cadillac STS comes equipped with a long list of standard or available safety equipment, including an advanced air bag system of dual front air bags; front and second-row outboard head-curtain and side-impact air bags; 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes; tire-pressure monitor; OnStar; automatic crash notification; stolen vehicle tracking; advanced electronic stability control with optional active steering technology; all-speed traction control; lane-departure warning system; side blind-zone alert system; and ultrasonic rear parking assist.

The 2009 Cadillac STS received 4-star ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for front and side-impact crash tests for the driver and front-seat passenger, and perfect 5-star ratings for rear-seat passenger side-impact crash tests. In NHTSA's rollover testing, the STS received 5 stars.

In addition to the high-tech engines, lane-departure warning and side blind-zone alert systems, the 2009 Cadillac STS features an advanced StabiliTrak electronic stability control system that operates the vehicle's steering system in conjunction with the brakes to help the driver correct a dangerous skid, Cadillac says. The 2009 STS also features an available factory-installed audio system with 5.1 studio surround sound, 15 Bose speakers, integrated 6-disc CD/DVD changer, and the ability to play formats ranging from DVD-A to CD and MP3. The system includes a full VGA-quality 8-inch touch screen and advanced navigation, Bluetooth phone capability, advanced voice recognition, and OnStar. In addition, OnStar Turn-by-Turn Navigation offers step-by-step trip directions with a live adviser. New this year is eNav that works in concert with Turn-by-Turn Navigation to deliver MapQuest directions.
