What's New for 2014:

  • Midnight Plum Metallic paint color
  • To be replaced by a redesigned 2015 model

Available in regular and extended-wheelbase (ESV) versions, the 2014 Cadillac Escalade is a full-size, body-on-frame sport utility vehicle that shares its architecture with the Chevrolet Tahoe/GMC Yukon and Chevrolet Suburban/GMC Yukon XL. This luxurious SUV is offered in four trim levels, accommodates up to 8 occupants, and can be configured with rear-wheel-drive (RWD) or all-wheel-drive (AWD) capability. Competitors include the Infiniti QX80, Lexus LX 570, Lincoln Navigator, Mercedes-Benz GL-Class, and the Land Rover Range Rover.

Models and Features
Base Escalade models are anything but basic, with a long list of standard amenities that includes a 10-speaker surround-sound audio system with rear controls, a complimentary 3-month satellite radio subscription, navigation system, tri-zone climate control, power-adjustable foot pedals, remote start, heated and cooled power front seats with 14-way adjustment, and leather upholstery. These amenities are joined by a power tilt steering wheel, power liftgate, 18-in. alloy wheels, and heated power-folding turn signal mirrors.

From there, the 2014 Cadillac Escalade Luxury keeps the niceties coming in the form of a power-folding second-row seat, heated steering wheel, power tilt/slide moonroof, active high-beam headlights, side blind-zone alert, and massive 22-in. alloy wheels.

Next in the lineup is the Escalade Premium, distinguished by its distinct exterior trim and power-retracting running boards and rear-seat entertainment system. Finally, the top-of-the-line Premium trim level rules the Escalade roost courtesy of its additional leather and genuine wood trim, highly responsive magnetic ride control suspension, heated and cooled cupholders, LED headlights, and chrome alloy wheels.

Options and Packages
Most of the 2014 Cadillac Escalade's available features are packaged as standard equipment on the various trim levels, though a 3-passenger second-row bench seat (in lieu of captain's chairs) is optional. Also, upgrades such as the rear-seat entertainment system and power-retractable running boards can be added to the Escalade Luxury version.

Under the Hood
A big SUV needs a big engine, and that's exactly what the 2014 Cadillac Escalade offers. All versions are fitted with a 6.2-liter V-8 that produces 403 horsepower and 417 lb.-ft. of torque, output that's directed to the ground via a 6-speed automatic transmission. Cylinder-deactivation technology allows the Escalade to operate on only 4 cylinders under light load situations.

Fuel Economy
All that power under the hood allows the 2014 Cadillac Escalade to tow up to 8,300 lbs., but it also comes at the expense of fuel efficiency. In RWD guise, regular and ESV models earn EPA estimates of 14 mpg in the city and 18 mpg on the highway. That's the best-case scenario; opt for AWD and the city rating slides just a bit to 13 mpg.

Safety Ratings and Technology
In crash tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2014 Cadillac Escalade received an overall rating of 4 (out of 5) stars. As this overview is written, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has not rated the crashworthiness of the 2014 Escalade.

Among the Escalade's standard safety items are 6 air bags, OnStar telematics with emergency response services, rearview camera and rear park-assist sensors, bright HID headlights and LED taillights, and 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes.
