Overview
The Escalade EXT, Cadillac's luxury sport utility truck (SUT) that was all-new in 2007, returns in 2009 as carryover and features standard, full-time all-wheel drive (AWD). GM touts the EXT's midgate panel as industry-exclusive, allowing owners to easily convert the 5-passenger EXT SUV to a 2-passenger pickup with 8 feet of secure and protected storage space.

Model Lineup
The 2009 Cadillac Escalade EXT comes in one version. Standard equipment includes full-time AWD; electronic stability control with rollover mitigation; road-sensing suspension; ultrasonic rear parking assist; remote start; driver information center; and a heavy-duty trailering package. Options include a power sunroof; rear-seat entertainment center; side blind-zone alert system; 18-inch, 7-spoke chromed aluminum wheels; and power-retractable running boards. The optional V-8 Ultra Luxury Collection package adds a heated steering wheel; heated and cooled front seats; power sunroof; 22-inch chrome wheels; DVD-based navigation radio with premium Bose 5.1 Cabin Surround Sound system; and a full-featured, DVD-based, touch-screen navigation system.

Powertrain
The 2009 Cadillac Escalade EXT's power comes from the same Gen IV, 6.2-liter, all-aluminum, Vortec V-8 engine as featured in the 2009 Escalade SUV, producing 403 hp at 5700 rpm and 417 lb.-ft. of torque at 4300 rpm. The engine utilizes variable valve timing (VVT) to boost horsepower and torque through optimized camshaft timing. For the first time, the Escalade EXT's engine is able to run on E85 ethanol, making Escalade EXT flex-fuel capable. A heavy-duty, 6-speed automatic transmission with two overdrive gears and tap up/tap down manual shift mode transfers the power to the wheels. EPA fuel-economy estimates for the 2009 AWD Cadillac Escalade EXT are 12 mpg city/19 mpg highway (gasoline), and 9 mpg city/14 mpg highway (E85). Standard on every 2009 Cadillac is a 5-year/100,000-mile transferable powertrain limited warranty with no deductible, 24/7 roadside assistance and courtesy transportation.

Safety
Safety features of note on the 2009 Cadillac Escalade EXT include a 4-channel electronic stability control system with rollover mitigation; traction control; 4-wheel disc brakes and Bosch anti-lock braking system; tire-pressure monitor; and ultrasonic rear parking assist to alert the driver to objects behind the vehicle. The Escalade EXT has standard advanced air bags, including dual-stage driver and passenger front air bags and occupant protection sensing system, and front and rear side curtain air bags.

The Cadillac Escalade EXT for 2009 receives perfect 5-star ratings for all occupants in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) frontal- and side-impact crash tests. In NHTSA rollover testing, the 2009 Escalade EXT receives a 3-star rating.

Technology
The AM/FM radio with 8-speaker Bose 5.1 Cabin Surround Sound system in the 2009 Cadillac Escalade EXT includes a fully featured DVD-based touch-screen navigation system and 6-disc DVD changer, CD and DVD audio/video, and MP3 player. XM satellite radio with NavTraffic gives real-time traffic updates. Also available is an optional in-dash DVD system with roof-mounted flip-down 8-inch diagonal screen featuring two 2-channel wireless headphones, remote game plug-in and auxiliary audio/video jacks. OnStar-equipped Cadillac Escalade EXT models have Generation 7 technology and OnStar's Turn-by-Turn Navigation, the first factory-installed, fully-integrated GPS navigation system from OnStar.
