Overview
The 2009 Cadillac DTS returns as mostly carryover from 2008, but still adds minor styling revisions as well as some technical features, three new exterior colors, and standard Tuscany-color leather seats on two models. The ultra-luxury DTS Platinum Edition also returns, featuring handcrafted leather interior, 292-hp Northstar V-8 engine, and performance-oriented features, plus other design touches. First introduced on the Escalade SUV, the Platinum Series is part of Cadillac's limited collection of ultra-luxury models.

Model Lineup
The 2009 Cadillac DTS full-size luxury sedan is available in DTS and DTS Platinum models, and five trims, including DTS V-8, Luxury I, II and III, and Performance. A DTS-L (livery sedan, introduced in 2007) is also available. Standard equipment on DTS V-8 includes the 275-hp Northstar V-8 engine; heated and cooled front seats and heated rear seats; heated steering wheel; dual-zone climate control; factory-installed Adaptive Remote Start with personalization; heated windshield washer fluid and rain-sensing wipers; power folding outside rearview mirrors; Intellibeam automatic high-beam headlamps; front and rear ultrasonic park assist; adaptive cruise control; DVD navigation; and in-dash 6-disc CD changer/MP3 player. Options include new 17-inch chrome wheels (available with up-level Luxury III package); Intelligent cruise control; up-level Tehama leather seats; power sunroof; 60/20/40 front bench seat; and advanced vehicle DVD navigation aid. New colors for 2009 include: Radiant Silver, Gray Flannel and Ocean Pearl Tricoat.

The limited-edition DTS Platinum features a handcrafted leather interior; 4.6-liter, 292-hp Northstar V-8 engine; 18-inch chromed aluminum wheels; bright chrome grille and door inserts; sunroof; DVD navigation system; and exclusive Platinum badge. Platinum models also feature Magnetic Ride Control and Performance Algorithm shifting; two unique interiors (Light Linen over Cocoa or all-Ebony); sunroof; DVD navigation; and LED interior ambient footwell lighting.

Powertrain
Two 4.6-liter Northstar V-8 engines add power to the 2009 DTS. The standard 4.6-liter Northstar V-8 engine (codenamed LD8) puts out 275 hp at 6000 rpm and 295 lb.-ft. of torque at 4400 rpm. The performance version 4.6-liter Northstar V-8 engine (L37 code) achieves 292 hp at 6300 rpm and 288 lb.-ft. of torque at 4500 rpm. EPA fuel-economy estimates for the 275-hp V-8 engine are 15 mpg city/23 mpg highway, while the 292-hp V-8 engine is estimated at 15 mpg city/22 mpg highway, both unchanged from 2008. Power is transferred in the front-wheel-drive system through a standard 4-speed electronically controlled automatic overdrive transaxle with an electronically controlled torque converter clutch. The performance engine utilizes a 4-speed transmission with Performance Algorithm shifting. Four-channel anti-lock brakes (ABS) and traction control, 4-channel electronic stability control with brake assist, and Magnetic Ride Control and 4-wheel independent suspension systems contribute to DTS's smooth and quiet ride. In addition, the disc brakes are now manufactured with a ferritic nitro carburizing process that inhibits rust, Cadillac says. Standard on every 2009 Cadillac is a 100,000-mile/5-year transferable powertrain limited warranty with no deductible, 24/7 roadside assistance, and courtesy transportation.

Safety
The 2009 Cadillac DTS has six standard air bags: an advanced dual-stage driver's-side air bag; an industry-first (per Cadillac) dual-depth front passenger air bag coupeed with GM's passenger sensing system; roof rail curtain air bags; and front-seat side-impact thorax air bags. Other DTS safety features include OnStar 8.0 with a Stolen Vehicle Slowdown system; 4-channel electronic stability control with brake assist; 4-channel ABS and traction control; Magnetic Ride Control; tire-pressure-monitoring system; and lane-departure warning and side blind-zone alert systems to help the driver avoid crashes and enhance vision in hard-to-see areas.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2009 Cadillac DTS receives a 5-star rating for the driver in frontal impact crash tests, and a 4-star rating for the passengers in frontal, and driver and rear passengers in side-impact crash tests. In NHTSA rollover testing, the DTS also receives a 4-star rating.

Technology
Lane Departure Warning and Side Blind Zone Alert, both introduced in 2008, use the latest safety technology with cameras, audible alerts and ultrasonic sensors to warn drivers of inadvertent lane changes or object adjacent the car in the driver's "blind spot." Other technology features in the 2009 DTS include Magnetic Ride Control, Onstar Turn-by-Turn Navigation system with fully integrated GPS and Emap powered by MapQuest; XM satellite radio with XM NavTraffic; Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free calling; and an in-dash, 6-disc CD changer audio system with "plug and play" auxiliary audio jack, MP3 player, Radio Data System (RDS), and 8 speakers.
