Introduction
The 2014 Buick Verano is a compact 4-door sedan with an emphasis on luxury. It is priced to compete against the top trim-level versions of mainstream compact models and the entry-level versions of luxury compact models. In terms of price, size, and position, the Verano's natural direct competitor is the Acura ILX.

Models and Features
Buick sells the 2014 Verano in a standard level of specification that can be upgraded with a choice between three main option groups. Standard equipment includes cloth seats with 8-way manual adjustment for the driver, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, power windows, power door locks with remote keyless entry, dual-zone automatic climate control with a humidity sensor, and QuietTuning to help make the interior quieter.

An IntelliLink color touch-screen infotainment system with a 7-inch display screen is also standard, and includes Bluetooth connectivity and music streaming capability, Siri Eyes Free technology, satellite radio, Pandora and Stitcher Internet radio, USB port, iPod connection, auxiliary audio input jack, and text-messaging capability. The Verano is also equipped with OnStar services, remote engine starting, a reversing camera, automatic headlights, fog lights, and 18-inch aluminum wheels.

Options and Packages
Buyers selecting the Convenience Group receive a power driver's seat, heated front seats, heated exterior mirrors, auto-dimming interior mirror, universal garage door opener, and forged aluminum 18-inch wheels. Additionally, the Convenience Group includes rear park-assist sensors, a rear cross-traffic alert system, side blind-zone alert system, lane-departure warning system, and a forward-collision alert system.

The Leather Group adds leather seats plus a premium audio system, passive keyless entry with push-button ignition, and a heated steering wheel. Veranos equipped with the Premium Group contain a more powerful turbocharged engine, sport pedal kit, dual exhaust outlets, and a rear spoiler.

With the selection of one of these option groups, additional upgrades include premium paint, a power sunroof, and a navigation system. The 2014 Verano is also offered with a number of dealer-installed extras.

Under the Hood
The 2014 Verano is equipped with a standard 180-horsepower, 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine. A 6-speed automatic transmission powers the car's front wheels.

To obtain the optional 2.0-liter, turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, which is rated to make 250 horsepower at 5,300 rpm and 260 lb.-ft. of torque starting at a low 2,000 rpm, it is necessary to opt for the car's Premium Group option. A 6-speed automatic transmission is standard with this engine, and buyers can opt for a 6-speed manual gearbox with the turbocharged engine.

Fuel Economy
According to the EPA, the most fuel-efficient Verano models have the standard 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine, which is rated to return 21 mpg in the city, 32 mpg on the highway, and 25 mpg in combined driving. The Premium Group's turbocharged engine gets 21 mpg in the city, 30 mpg on the highway, and 24 mpg in combined driving. Add the manual transmission to the turbocharged engine, and those figures are 20 mpg in the city, 31 mpg on the highway, and 24 mpg in combined driving.

Safety Ratings and Technology
In crash testing conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2014 Buick Verano receives a 5-star overall rating (out of 5 stars). The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) had not rated the 2014 Verano for crash-test performance as this overview was written.

In terms of safety features, all Veranos have a reversing camera and a trial 6-month subscription to OnStar services, which includes Automatic Crash Response. In the event of an air bag deployment, Automatic Crash Response activates and contacts an OnStar operator who can communicate directly with the Verano's occupants and dispatch emergency rescue personnel to the car's exact location.

For 2014, Buick enhances the Convenience Group with several safety-related features. In addition to rear park-assist sensors, this year the option package includes a rear cross-traffic alert system and a side blind-zone alert system. New technologies for 2014 include a lane-departure warning system and a forward-collision alert system.
