Introduction
The 2014 Buick Regal is a premium midsize sedan available in three trim levels with front-wheel-drive (FWD) or all-wheel-drive (AWD) capability and power coming from a turbocharged engine or hybrid powertrain. Competitors include the Acura TL, Audi A4, Chevrolet Malibu, Chrysler 200, Ford Fusion, Honda Accord, Hyundai Sonata, Infiniti Q50, Kia Optima, Lexus IS, Toyota Camry, Volkswagen CC, and the Volvo S60.

Models and Features
Named simply Regal, the lineup's entry-level trim level has dual-zone climate control, OnStar telematics, heated power-adjustable front seats, rearview camera, 18-inch alloy wheels, heated turn signal mirrors, and an 8-inch touch-screen infotainment system.

Building upon the base model, the Regal Premium I adds push-button start, power front seats with 8-way adjustment, rear park-assist sensors, heated steering wheel, remote start, and a universal garage door opener. One step up from the Premium I is the aptly named Premium II model. Buyers of this Regal are treated to standard amenities including Bose audio, HID headlights, navigation system, and rear side air bags.

Those variants pave the way for the sport-oriented Regal GS, a model Buick has differentiated with Brembo brakes, revised bumpers and rocker panels, stainless steel dual exhaust, 19-inch alloy wheels, deeply bucketed front seats, rear spoiler, and unique foot pedals.

Options and Packages
Although they are already well equipped, the 2014 Buick Regal base and Premium I models can be dressed up a bit more with items such as a power tilt/slide moonroof and a navigation system. However, the feature-packed options are reserved for the Premium II and GS. One example is the Driver Confidence 1 package, which consists of side blind-zone alert, lane-departure warning and lane-change alert, rear cross-traffic alert, and a forward-collision warning system. These upgrades can be complemented by a Driver Confidence 2 package containing an intelligent cruise control system as well as Buick's automatic Collision Preparation with Braking technology.

Under the Hood
New for 2014, all Regals feature a turbocharged, direct-injection, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that produces 259 horsepower and 295 lb.-ft. of torque. Output is the same across the board, though the GS is tuned to receive peak torque at a slightly lower rpm. A 6-speed automatic transmission is standard for all Regals, but a 6-speed manual is optional on the FWD GS.

In addition to the boosted 2.0-liter, Buick offers its eAssist hybrid system on the 2014 Regal. Components include a direct-injection, 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine, 15-kW electric motor, and a Lithium-ion battery pack, all of which produce net ratings of 182 horsepower and 172 lb.-ft. of torque. Availability is limited to the Premium I trim level.

Further behind the scenes is the 2014 Regal's updated chassis, with AWD models getting the GS's high-performance front suspension and an all-new H-arm rear suspension.

Fuel Economy
EPA fuel-economy estimates for the 2014 Buick Regal are:

Like other Buicks, the Regal is equipped with a generous assortment of safety features. Depending on the trim level selected, the list includes up to 8 air bags, rearview camera, front and rear park-assist sensors, electronic stability control, and 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with brake assist. There are also several desirable safety systems available as options, including side blind-zone alert and rear cross-traffic alert.
